A/N Before I start I want to say that the idea of there being another man for Sweeney to sort of 'compete' with for Nellie was inspired by Sweeneyheaney24's story 'Bloody hell just fall in love already!' so credit to them for the inspiration and I promise I won't copy it xx
Anyway on with the story. Sorry for this taking so long, I've been lacking inspiration lately.
Sweeney and Nellie were cuddling on the couch.
They'd both felt rather lazy this morning so after Sweeney's little food taster session they both crashed in the living room where it was cosy and warm.
Sweeney was slowly getting used to this touchy feely stuff and although he still didn't spill his feelings that often he could get used to the cuddling, it was starting to grow on him.
Sweeney smiled lovingly at Nellie as she rested her head on his chest and his hand moved to gently stroke her head "I'm not a dog Sweeney!" Nellie giggled and Sweeney moved his hand away with a shy expression "Sorry.."
Nellie noticed that she'd made Sweeney awkward by the way he'd suddenly tensed up "But I'd still like it if you continued." She quickly added which made the smile return to Sweeney's face and his muscles relaxed as his hand returned to her head, continuing to stroke it gently.
Nellie was in total bliss cuddled up to Sweeney right now with him stroking her hair, she'd never felt more comfortable and safe than right now in his arms, so when she heard a knock at the door which interrupted Sweeney's open and good mood she was pretty annoyed. "I'll get it love." Nellie said as she detangled herself from Sweeney and fixed her now frizzy hair from where Sweeney had been stroking it.
"Sorry sir we don't open until 10.."
Nellie trailed off and a huge grin appeared on her face as she looked up at the man standing in the doorway.
"George!" She cried happily and threw herself into the arms of the man.
Sweeney was confused by all Nellie's squealing so he reluctantly got off of the couch and went to investigate what Nellie was so excited about but when he saw Nellie hugging another man he felt like someone had kicked him in the gut.
Nellie pulled away from the man before grinning excitedly at Sweeney "Sweeney this is my old friend George, he went to school with us remember?!"
Sweeney did remember. He remembered clearly.
Not only was George her friend in school but at one point he was also her boyfriend.
Sweeney had always hated him. Not because he'd liked her, no, he didn't feel that way towards her back then, but merely because to Sweeney there was always something suspicious about him and he was constantly worried about Nellie hanging out with him.
His suspicions were confirmed when not only two months after they'd started dating at the age of 17 George cheated on her with another girl and Nellie had been devastated. He clearly remembered the hours he spent sitting with her whilst she bawled her eyes out over that douche-bag, trying to make her see reason and understand that it wasn't her fault;she'd kept blaming herself.
Eventually she came round but for a good year or so after that Nellie never got close to another boy other than Sweeney because she couldn't trust them in case they broke her heart again.
After that somehow they became friends again and because Nellie and Sweeney went to different colleges there was nothing Sweeney could do to stop them becoming friends again no matter how much he'd tried to tell her that he was bad news and that getting close to him again was a bad idea, she was just as stubborn as Sweeney so she ignored him and he was the reason for their first ever proper fight; When Sweeney got really angry at George and broke his nose for 'no reason' according to Nellie but that was Sweeney's payback for all the misery he'd caused her back when she was 17 and after that Sweeney and Nellie didn't talk for months.
That was definitely one of the darkest times of his life.
And the cause for it was standing right in front of him, hugging his sort of girlfriend.
Sweeney felt his jaw and fists unintentionally clench just at the sight of him "Hello George." He greeted through gritted teeth, knowing that he had to be nice for Nellie's sake because he really didn't want a repeat of that childhood argument which had almost ruined their friendship because now it would ruin more than their friendship; their relationship.
George smiled at Sweeney "Nice to meet you again Ben." He greeted back, holding out his hand and Sweeney clenched his fists tighter, the mention of his old name annoying him only further, saying nothing to him and ignoring his hand to show that he still disliked him, even though it seemed Nellie had forgotten all the misery he'd caused her.
Nellie could instantly see the hate in Sweeney's eyes and the quickly pulled away from George and stood by Sweeney's side and held his hand, hoping to calm him down as the look on his face clearly said 'I'm going to murder him'.
"George this is Sweeney, he's my..close friend." Nellie explained to George, not saying that they were dating because technically they weren't yet dating even though it was clear they very much liked the other person, they hadn't made it official.
George smirked and took opportunity to take advantage of their indecisiveness "So you're not dating?"
They both shook their heads and George quickly pulled Nellie back towards him "So you wouldn't mind if I took Nellie out for some coffee? Just as friends of course."
Sweeney clenched his fists tighter. He hated how George was handling Nellie but he held his tongue, feeling like exploding with rage when he heard George suggest them going out for coffee which Sweeney knew was a way of disguising a date.
He hadn't even been on a date with Nellie yet! He wasn't going to let some no good cheater take her out.
But the second he saw the excited look on Nellie's face he sighed and started to give in.
Nellie didn't really have any friends seeing as the women in London were very cliquey and the men only wanted her for her body so as well as him George was really her only real friend and who was he to deny her to have a friend?
Even if he was the biggest jerk in the history of the world.
So because he didn't want to upset Nellie he gave a short nod but fixed George with a stern look, warning him to not try any funny business.
"Great! Well see you later Ben." George said with a false smile before hurrying out the door, dragging Nellie with him.
Sweeney watched them leave out the window, breathing deeply, hands shaking with rage as he tried to calm down like Nellie had been teaching him but he simply couldn't so he just stomped off upstairs to his parlor where he could brood in peace.
