Chapter 6

Jade

It's been two months now and I haven't been bullied since Cam started the system of protection around me. Although I see him every other class when he picks me up, I feel like there's something he's not telling me. Whenever Gavin is around, I can't help but feel him keeping a distance.

As we're walking out of the school I grab his arm and pull him to the car. "hey... can we talk?" He shakes his head, looking past me. I turn around and see Gavin watching us, I get mad and look at Cam. "why do you care what Gavin's doing? he's just my friend, you act like he's my boyfriend." He looks at me and I finally see it in his eyes. "oh my gosh... you're jealous aren't you?"

His face turns beet red. "No! I just... I uhm..." I half smirk "you so are," he blushes and before he can object I put my finger over his lips. "Cam, I see right through you ok, just admit it." He sighs and looks at me, "ok, so I am jealous, it's not gonna change anything, he really likes you, more than you can see and i'm not wanted in the picture. Real life can't be like our dreams Jade."

Before he can move otherwise, I stand up on my tippy toes and kiss his cheek. When he's silent I look at him. I feel the heat in my cheeks. "You are wanted in the picture Cam. You're the only guy i've ever wanted in the picture this way." He blushes and smiles wrapping his arms around my waist slowly. He kisses my forehead as I rest my hands on his chest. "Can you stop being jealous of Gavin now?" He laughs softly and looks in my eyes. "yes... if you will be my girlfriend" "I will."

Cam

I wake up around three a.m. and thrash around. I sneak out of the house and go to Jade's house. She always leaves the door unlocked for me now, so I just walk in. To my surprise she's awake and sitting on the couch, I hear sniffling and I walk over and sit by her. "Jade? what's wrong?" she looks at me and points to her phone. The screen is lit up with an open text message.

I pick up her phone and read a text from her dad. "coming to visit, tell your mom i'll pick you up tomorrow." I put her phone down. "does he not know she's dead? and that you can drive yourself?" She leans into my arms, "no, he left when I was four, and he hasn't talked to me, until now. I dont want to see him, I hate him! He abandoned us and pretended we didn't even exist."

I kiss the top of her head and pull her closer. "so don't go. We can go on a date or something." I blush as the words leave my mouth, she smiles. "Are you asking me on a date?" I gulp a little and blush. "yes, I believe I am, do I get an answer?" She nods and kisses my cheek and snuggles into my arms. "yes, you can take me on a date, and not just to avoid my dad."

We go upstairs to her room and crawl in her bed. She smiles softly, "bad dream?" I nod as she pulls the blanket over us, and I pull her close. "yeah... It was bad, I had a horrible feeling that you were in danger." "well, I was more or less just distressed, but yes, your feelings were right."

I nod and hold her. "well i'm here now, i'll protect you from everything and anything." She smiles and looks up at me, "my very own superhero, how exciting." I smile and we fall asleep listening to the rain begin.

When I wake up. I see Jade already dressed and she sits by me. "hey there," I smile, "morning, beautiful." She blushes and I smile. "Is there school today?" she shakes her head and thunder rumbles outside. "school was cancelled, some hale broke a few windows, but I need to do some grocery shopping." I nod and get up finding my stash of clean cloths and I pull them on.

"do you want me to go with you, in case you run into him?" She nods and we sit on her bed. I touch her cheek softly. "hey, everything's gonna be ok I promise." She nods and I pull her into my arms. She finally gives a soft sigh and a smile and she holds my hand. "come on, lets leave before we're too late."

Jade

About an hour later we get back to the house with a trunk full of groceries. Cam had made me cheer up by buying me ice cream and pushing me in the cart. He said I needed a distraction. We jammed out to the radio the whole drive home.

As I pull into the driveway, I freeze and quickly back out and drive to the park. "Jade? What is it? What's wrong?" "he's here!" I park the car near a tree and run to the jungle gym and I collapse onto the wood-chips. Cam chases me and he sits at my side and pulls me close. "does he have a key?" I shake my head "no, we've changed the locks a million times since he left," "but he's there? waiting for you?" I nod and bury my face in his chest and we stay silent for a while.

We stay in the park until it's around sunset. Cam holds me close and when I realize i'll have to face him no matter what I get up and take his hands. "let's go home... i'll have to face him eventually." Cam kisses my head. "when he finds out about your mom... will he try to take you away?" I shrug. "im not sure... if he does... would you run away with me?"

He doesnt answer for a while, thinking it over. He finally touches my cheek and smiles. "i'll follow you to the ends of the earth." I blush and hug him tightly.

When we get to my house, Cam helps me carry groceries in. Dad gets out of his car and smiles at me, I just glare and walk inside. "Jade, you can't ignore me." I snap at him immediately. "you don't own me! you abandoned me and left me and mom alone for over fifteen years! I have nothing to say to you. I will never forgive you. You don't get to tell me what to do because you have no right!" Cam touches my shoulders and I cover my mouth fighting tears.

Dad turns his gaze to Cam. "and you are?" "i'm Jade's boyfriend," He says confidently as if it was a fact he should have known. Dad scowls. "and who gave you permission to date my daughter?" I stand in front of Cam, "what do you care?! you left and gave up all any rights to call me your daughter... now leave!!"

Suddenly he has me by the arm, "let's go, you're coming with me." I pull my arm away, "like hell I am! lets go Cam." I take his hand and we run out the door. I grab my cellphone and dial 911. "hello police station, what is your emergency?" "hello, there's a man in my house that I don't know, I think he's a robber, please hurry!" I drive around the corner with Cam and wait for the police to show up.

When they put dad in handcuffs I feel relieved yet guilty. I lean against cam and hold his hand. He kisses my head lightly. I feel warmth at his touch and smile. The officer walks over and asks me questions about what I saw and what went down. I play the situation off as if I had never met the man. It's not a total lie, I had never truly met my father, just one card when I was young and a picture my mom had of him.

When the police and my dad are gone I walk inside and Cam and I put the groceries away. "so, how about that date?" he smiles behind me. I turn around and look in his eyes. "yeah... sounds perfect right about now."
