Jade
After three weeks of roaming the US for a decent place to stay we arrive in Florida. We head straight for a beach and I don’t hesitate to run right out of the car and into the ocean. Cam follows laughing and he picks me up, taking me into the water and I squeal. It’s so cold, but it feels so refreshing.
I jump out of Cams arms and I pull him further into the water. “Come on Cam, don’t be a chicken,” “hey baby, i’m no chicken,” “then prove it tough guy, go under.” He smirks deviously and he giggles. “fine, then you’re coming with me!” He picks me up and jumps and we both fall into the salty sea water. When we surface I laugh and punch his arm. “hey, no fair!” He smiles and pulls me close, “all’s fair in love and war.”
I laugh and kiss his nose and we get out of the ocean and I find two lost towels and hand him one and we dry off. “think we could make a home here? Call Lexi and tell her to come and visit anytime she’d like… avoid Gavin and my father… you don’t think Gavin will find us here do you?” Cam shrugs and we sit in the warm sand with our towels wrapped around us. He holds me close and sighs, “I hope he doesn’t… because then I might have to break his nose for hurting you twice.”
I smile softly and I lean against Cam, as he get the medical junk and changes my soaked bandages. “I may not love him like he loves me, but he was my best friend for so long Cam… how do I just let that go?” Cam sighs, seemingly deep in thought. After several minutes he sighs and looks at me. “Maybe we need to meet him somewhere, so we can settle this and stop the fighting… he needs to see your happy and that he’s only hurting you.” I nod and we get back in the car. I grab my phone and start to text Gavin where we are, I hesitate before I hit send, but I manage to take a deep breath and I lean against Cam’s chest.
In a matter of minutes Gavin is on the beach and he walks over to my car, he looks normal, not as angry and inhuman as before. Cam and I get out of the car and I immediately take his hand, Gavin grits his teeth at the sight of us. “why did you let me find you?” I take a deep breath, “because you keep following us, trying to separate us, and it needs to stop… Gavin how did you know that I end up dying when I find Cam?”
There’s a long silence before he sits in the sand and looks at us. “Because i’ve seen it every time… I’m supposed to protect you, I was assigned as your guardian angel after your first death. We found out that someone had cursed you and Cam to be reborn once you die. It’s a never ending cycle.” I sit in front of him. “So that’s why you ruined my first date ever? why you hurt me? to protect me?!”
He sighs and nods. “Yeah… but i'm sorry for that, I just know that every time he’s walked into your life in the past, you’ve died, just like you do in your dreams… they’re memories Jade.” I look at him and shake my head like he’s insane. “No, as many times as i’ve seen it I refuse to believe it.” Gavin looks up and his eyes flash something dark. “You never believe it until it’s too late… i’ve had this talk with you before Jade.”
Cam sits beside me and holds me, this makes Gavin tense up. “I’m not gonna kill her… every dream involves a tree, lightning and someone else killing her… here there are only palm trees, not an oak like in our dreams, I mean memories.” Gavin considers this a moment before looking around. “Those are memories, how she dies can be different.” He finally catches sight of the necklace around my neck. “Who gave that to you?” I reach up and touch the black stone. “a voodoo lady, she said it would help me be in control of my own destiny.”
Gavin reaches forward to touch it but I lean back. “What are you doing?” He looks at me. “Relax… I won’t hurt you unlike him.” I look at him and pull down my sleeve showing him the bandages. “You did hurt me… not Cam.” He stares at it and looks as if he might cry. “No… I wouldn’t hurt you… I’d never…” I look at him. “It happened when you tried to take me away at the gas station a week ago… the blade you held to my throat, cut my arm when I slipped away.”
He stares at it. “I… I’m so sorry… I didn’t know.” He clears his throat and looks back to the necklace. “Uhm… anyway… the necklace, it’s an angelic charm, it will allow you to control your fate… the lady wasn’t a fake clearly, it’s probably how you're still alive.” I touch it gingerly and look up at Gavin. “If its keeping me safe, then why are you still trying to separate Cam and I? And don’t tell me its cuz you love me.”
Gavin sighed. “Because I dont wanna see you die again… You think it's painful for you both to relive in dreams, try watching it happen but not being able to stop it.” He rubs his neck. “Remember that old story, Romeo and Juliet?” I nod.
Gavin sighs. “Okay minus the theatrics, that's pretty much your story a few centuries ago… Every lifetime is different but one thing is the same, you find each other, fall in love and boom… Jade dies, Cam is so grief struck that he kills himself. This is the first life where you have that charm, and the first life where you both have the dreams and memories… Maybe I over reacted, maybe there is a chance… But if that's true, we're gonna have one hell of a fight on our hands.”
