"This. Is. Amazing" Jane exclaimed "hell yea it is!" Jacob added making Jane flinch and cover her ears. "We'll take left you take right" Quentin said pointing to the doors "well what if I wanted to go right?" Jane jokingly asked "then we'll go right" "calm down I was kidding". "Will you two just go" Jacob said interrupting them, "alright alright" they laughed before going down the halls.
The lights in each hall were on and everything could be seen, "Hey! I found like three bedrooms with bathrooms!" Jacob yelled. "Same here!" Quentin yelled back "Whats that?" Jane asked pointing towards the room with no door, though Quentin couldn't see her hand he knew what she was pointing to. "I dunno" he said walking closer to it, "its... a kitchen? This place has a kitchen?" said Jane. The kitchen was painted with clean pale yellow walls and marble floors and counters with a diner set table made for four. "Jacob! We found a kitchen" in an instant Jacob was in the kitchen with them, "guys I found a door, it leads outside" Quentin and Jane both looking at him in a way that said, 'show it to us' but he just stood there thinking they were gonna gasp or speak.
"Well what are you waiting for?! Show us" Jane said as Quentin gestured for him to move, "oh, oh! Its this way!" Jacob said leading them to the other hallway. Though Jacob got good grades, (which seemed weird to Quentin since he was out getting drunk most of the time) he was lacking complete common sense.
At the end of it was a spiral staircase leading to a balcony the door on it had the same thick metal look the door in their aunts basement had. The only difference was the rust and the writing on it wasn't the same. "The writing, its different" Jane said as they walked up the stairs "are there keys for it?" asked Quentin as he stepped in front of the door, "yea, right here" Jacob said quietly taking it of the coat rack it was hanging on. "Ready to do-" "JUST OPEN IT!" Jane yelled impatiently at Quentin "got it" he replied quickly as he rushed to turn the lock and opened the door.
The area around them was as usual cold but they stood on a large cement circle that resembled a parking lot with grass on the perimeter, it was weird as it had no path leading else where. "Where are we?" Jacob asked, "not in your aunts basement that's for a fact" Jane chuckled "yea, apparently we're in Spirit Lake, Iowa" said Quentin looking up from his phone, "what? How far are we from home?" Jacob asked "1,203.4 miles"
"That's.... that's amazing" Jane said, "from what I can see actual human interaction wouldn't be seen for miles". "That means-" "the door in your aunts basement is a portal" Jane said cutting Jacob off. "We should probably go back inside" Quentin said earning a nod of agreement from them both.
"This is insane!" Jacob said shaking his head as they walked back into the building. "That's not the only thing that's weird" replied Jane, "What do you mean?" Quentin asked as he walked to the lounge and sat down on one of the white couches across from Jacob who sat on the brown one opposite of them. "Haven't you seem to notice that everything in here is clean, barely any dust at all..... Someones been here not to long ago" her words made the brothers jump in their seats, and she knew why "do you think..?" "mom" Quentin answered quickly.
"Why would mom have keys to portals? Why did she leave them for us?" "Well obviously your mother was some sort of a magical being, and a strong one too, she'd have to be if she has portals" Jane replied in a tone that made it seem like they should've known this. "That sly b-" "Don't say it" Quentin said in a warning tone. They were having an adventure and those words that were to exit Jacobs mouth would ruin it all for Quentin, he didn't want to start another fight.
"That sly bitch" mocked Jacob "don't call my mother a bitch!" Quentin shouted as he bolted from his seat, scaring Jane in the process, she stayed silent, but if they could see her face they would know. She had snuggled deep into Quentin's pocket, covering her ears as tightly as she could in an attempt to smuggle the unnecessarily loud noises. "Well shes my mom too!" "THEN ACT LIKE IT" Quentin retorted, he was furious with his brother, they find out their mom had some sort of magic and all Jacob can do is call her bitch.
