I managed to catch up on my lack of sleep by going to bed early on Monday night, so I was completely refreshed from the weekend in time for my date on Tuesday.
I sit laser-focused while I line my lips with my favorite strawberry-colored lip liner and fill them in with my matching plumping lipstick. I slide a sleek metal headband over my tamed blonde hair and sweep some light blush on to complete the look. This is the first date Ryan and I are going on since he announced that he wanted to take our relationship slowly back at the fundraiser. Between my job and his job, our schedules have had a hard time syncing up, so we were both eager to go out when we realized we were free tonight.
I slip my feet into my favorite nude heels and I'm giddy when I hear the doorbell. I strut out of my room and catch Ryan talking to Austin in the foyer. Hamilturd is hanging out in the kitchen with my mother and I want to escape before she can make some kind of backhanded compliment about my appearance like she so often does. I catch Ryan's emeralds as I come down the steps and he quickly grins as he runs his eyes over me.
"Hello there, gorgeous. Ready to go?" I nod as I gracefully descend down the curved staircase and when I reach the bottom, I swipe my clutch off the hallway table. I notice Ryan is also dressed up in black slacks and a maroon button-down. He's freshly shaven and I notice he is also sporting a new trendy haircut.
We are just about to slip out unnoticed when I hear high heels clicking down the hallway. I grab Ryan's hand to usher him outside but Margot catches us as we are opening the door.
"Oh Sawyer, you look great! That dress is super cute! You have that perfect full figure to pull it off." I feign a smile and flatly reply, "Thanks," before tugging on Ryan's hand again. Austin slings his arm over Margot's shoulder and so much bright blondness together is making my eyes hurt. They have the same matching white blonde hair and wide blue eyes that they could almost look related. I will definitely have to make a joke about this to Austin another time.
"Well, we need to go. See y'all later," I say, trying to escape but Margot pipes up again, "Where y'all going to dinner?" I glance back to her as Ryan answers, "I think we were going to try the Oceanaire. Get outside of Hollis for a bit." Margot grimaces and shakes her head, "Oh no, don't go there. I got food poisoning from the Coq au vin. It was terrible. It's also pretty fancy." I love how she thinks I'm not classy enough for a place like the Oceanaire and says it oh-so-subtly.
I look back to Ryan and shrug, "Well, we probably shouldn't go anywhere that gave Margot diarrhea, so maybe we can just go on down to Tansey's instead," I say. "I could go for a good burger with the simple folk." I look back to a bright red Margot and Austin is frowning at me. I wave them off and pull Ryan out the door. When we are inside his truck, I look to him and say, "You are Austin's best friend. How can you let him date a cow like Margot?" He laughs and starts driving down my long driveway.
"I ain't entirely sure what he sees in her," he says. "But truth be told, I don't think she means to come across as harsh as she does. I don't think she sees how her words come across. She's the oblivious blonde." I glance at him while shaking my head,
"Girls know how to play mental mind games. She knows what she's doing." He grins at me and his pretty face helps me forget all my frustrations with Austin's new girlfriend. He reaches across the console and drops his hand on my leg. He looks back to me and says, "You really do look pretty." I blush and flit my eyes back to him.
"Thank you. Thankfully I have the full figure to pull this little number off."
Ryan laughs and swats my leg, "Everyone is full-figured compared to Margot. She has the figure of a twelve-year-old. Could probably snap that girl in half with my two hands."
