Chapter 5~ Scott

I hold Mitch in my arms, shock covering my eyes. What had been done to someone so strong to make them like this? Why did he keep saying the others killed me? I'm still here; this isn't a crazy dream... It can't be. I'm not in a coma or anything, right?

"Scott, I can explain what they've done to him. It's been done to me twice before as well. He'll get over it, I promise; he just won't be the same. No ones ever the same." Kirstie says softly and I look up from Mitch to look at the small girl.

"What did they do? What happened to my Mitch?" I ask and she smiles sadly at me, and she keeps her distance, instead of coming closer like I expected.

"They've put him through the alternate reality. It's this serum that they've made, and it makes you see things that are your absolute worst nightmare. I guess Mitch's worst nightmare is losing you because of us. Or worse, having us kill you or because he wasn't there to help you. I've gone through it twice; they use this serum to find out what it'll take to break you. So that they can exploit that." She explains and Avi and Kevin share a glance.

"So... What if we refuse to go through with it?" Avi asks and she looks at him.

"You can't refuse. Trust me; I've tried that. You pay the price if you don't do as he orders." She says icily and I feel Mitch finally let go of me.

"So... You guys would never try to hurt him...?" Mitch whispers so quietly even I can barely hear him and even though the others couldn't hear them, they all seem to know what he said.

"Mitchie, we would never hurt Scott intentionally. Ever. We're a team, the five of us. We're a group, and nobody, not even Sterlingson, can change that. Understand?" Avi says and Mitch finally comes out of my hold, but he still refuses to meet their eyes.

"Mitch, they promised. It's ok now. Nobody's hurt me. I'm ok. In fact, I'm the king of ok." I say and he looks at me. And then he grins.

"So, Kirstie, what did he do to you? When you disobeyed him?" Mitch fires at the girl, and I groan internally. Just when things were starting to calm down, you can bet on Mitch to refuel to fire.

"It's nothing of your concern, Mitch. He'd never dare do it to you, any of you. He knows that if he can hit you in your heart, mentally instead of physically, he'll end up gaining instead of losing. With me, he flopped it. Physicality is not my strong point, and he knows that. He's going to exploit us all in any way that will make us weaker than himself. So me, physically. Mitch, emotionally. The rest of you, well, we'll probably figure that out sooner rather than later." She says tiredly, flopping down on the couch, and we all just kinda stare at her.

"What? You know it's true. He's going to put the rest of us through the reality serum sooner rather than later. You all know it's true. My guess is that he'll take Scott, and then Avi, and then Kevin. And once we've all been exposed to the serum, he'll start using it more frequently. I've got a feeling that he's gonna put us through everything he can just to make sure we don't go crazy or something if something bad happens. He wants us to be at the same level, and lower than him so we can't take him over." She says and Kevin is nodding.

"It all makes sense, what you're saying Kirstie. It does. But we don't know what he's even capable of. We have no clue. But you do! You've been exposed to some of this stuff, and none of us have! You can help us all by telling us. If we can escape this room, then we can escape. There's no way that he can stop all five of us at one time!" Kevin says excitedly and Kirstie sits up, her eyes filled with alarm and fear.

"No! I won't tell you! It's a mistake, trying to escape. If you try, he's not going to let us go. Kevin, I promise you that it's a bad idea. I know that you've probably already figured out how to get out of here, but I can assure its a bad idea." She says quickly and Mitch looks at all of us.

"I agree with Kevin. We need to get out. Soon." Avi says and Mitch shakes his head.

"I've been through that reality serum, and I can tell you that if we try anything he's probably got something even worse to use on us! We need to stay put!" Mitch says, going over to Kirstie, and she smiles gratefully at him. He grins back, and all of them look at me.

"What do you think, Scott?" Avi asks and I feel pressured suddenly.

"I don't know. Let's all just chill out, and think this through like rational people. We can do that, surely. Ok, Avi, Kevin. I promise you that we will get out of here one day. We just have to wait for the right moment, so that we can get away without Sterlingson getting us. We will get out, I promise. All five of us will." I say, and the two sigh, and Kirstie shoots me a small smile, and then mouths "thank you" to me, and I nod slightly.

"So, we wait then." Kevin says and the five of us sit there, silence enveloping us.
