             SOPHIA'S  POV

If someone told me ten years ago that I was going to be a single mother at twenty-five to a six-year-old, living with her high school best friend after calling off her engagement a week before the wedding. I would not believe them.

I once thought I would have the ideal career, marriage, and family. However, everything changed that terrible night six years ago, and I frequently wonder what my life would be like if I stayed home that night.

" Are you sure you don't want me to stay? She asked hesitating at the door.

She wore a purple sheath dress and black kitten heels, you would think she is going on a date, but far from it, she was just the type of girl who would never be caught looking frumpy.

I often wondered how we became best friends when we were nothing alike.

back in high school, she was one of the popular girls, her fashion ideas and lifestyle were featured in every series of our school magazine, every boy wanted to date her, and she picked the hottest boy from the basketball team then. they were like the power couple of crescent high school, while I was just a nerd,  no one noticed.

When she moved in next door I disliked that I had to see her every morning, she often had a smile on her face and tried to be friendly which I found very annoying. I already judged her as one of those mean popular girls.

my parents liked her and often suggested we drive to school together in her old BMW.
It seemed weird at first but we soon realized we had a lot in common
Just like that, two girls from different worlds became best friends.

"Lorna I'm not a kid, I promise I can take care of myself,"   I said accompanied by a light sigh.
I knew my reply was not enough to convince her.
She was a persistent one, Just when she was about to object, I raised my left hand and put the right one over my chest as if I was taking a pledge.

" I promise by the time you get back I'll be jumping cheerfully all over the place ". I said with a light smile to cheer her up.

Her face brightened up and she took a glance at her wristwatch, " shit! It's almost time to pick up my baby ." she screamed and ran off before I said another word.

The baby she referred to is my six-year-old daughter who was practically Lorna's everything, she loved and protected her, and I was so grateful for that.

watching my daughter run into my arms as I picked her up from school was one of the best feelings in the world, but today I was mentally drained, so Lorna offered to pick her up instead.

I loathed myself for getting involved with someone hell-bent on destroying my happiness. I had already gone through pain in the past, and the last thing I wanted was to go through another pain because of a man.

I mustered a little bit of strength and moved to the refrigerator for a drink to soothe my nerves.

my cellphone rang, and the name that appeared made my heart sink, I thought of ignoring but I reluctantly picked it up, hoping it won't be as disastrous as I expected.

"Sophia Adams, what in God's name have I done to deserve these embarrassments from you? ",

The feminine voice on the other line said, I shut my eye tight to prevent the tears from rolling down my chin.
