Chapter 7

I fought to ignore an errant sunbeam, to get back to my dream, but the moment had passed. I heard a high pitched voice that echoed distinctively down the hallway, followed by a loud bang as my bedroom door flew open.

"Jessica!" The voice of my grandmother who I usually call Nana (pronounced as Nena) sounded.

I groaned and half opened my eyes. I stretched my arms above my head and curled my toes. I sat on my bed, not wanting to get out of my comfortable zone. I rubbed my knuckles on my eyes to drive away the sleep and tried to remember what I had planned for today.

"Jessica! Get out of your bed!" My grandmother gave a hard pinch on my thighs which made me jerk up, fully awake. I jumped off my bed immediately and groaned in pain.

I dragged my feet towards the bathroom. As I stepped onto the cold hard tiles, Nana shooked her head in displease and whispered something incoherent under her breath which I could not make out clearly. I ignored her and carried out my morning pampering.

Once I finished showering, I wore my pink fuzzy bathrobe and wrapped a towel on my hair. A cold shiver ran down my spine as I stepped out of my bathroom.

I opened my wardrobe and stared longingly at its content. Another hard time choosing what to wear. Sigh. I picked a pair of dark blue skinny jeans and a light beige coloured top with a black peter pan collar.

I quickly grabbed my Nana's handmade knitted cardigan hanging from the back of my door. Taking a quick glance at the full body mirror in my room, I pursed my lips and an eyebrow shot upwards not sure whether I looked nice in my outfit. I narrowed my eyes at myself and walked out my bedroom.

I rushed down the stairs to the dining area hastily, jumping on the last two steps.

"Nana, what's today's breakfast?" I said in a sing-song voice.

Instead of replying, Nana turned around away from the refrigerator and passed me a bowl of cornflakes cereal with milk. I sat on the stool and began gauging on it.

"How's school so far?" Nana said as she sat on the dining chair opposite me.

"It's fine." I said shaking my head slightly, contradicting with my comment as I continued eating my breakfast.

Once I finished the cereal, Nana took the bowl over to the basin and did the washing.

"Thanks Nana!" I pecked her on the forehead and walked off to the living room.

"I'd better get going now. Love you Nana!" I said as I grabbed my backpack off a chair.

She yelled "Take care Jessy!!" all the way from the kitchen. I could still hear the clinging noise of the dishes against the metal sink from where I was in the living room.

I rushed and went out of the house door. The spring breeze caressed my cheeks as I stepped onto the freshly mowed grass with my boots at the front yard.

I walked for about five minutes until I came to the nearby park. I walked towards the bench where I was suppose to meet Rosie. She was already there sitting on the bench with her legs crossed as she leaned backed on the bench. Her straight blonde hair blew to the side as she look down at her phone.

I made my way to her and she looked up from her phone, grinning at me as she stood up.

"Hey Rosie!" I chirped with excitement.

"Hey Jess. Still can't get over what happened that night huh?" Rosie smirked.

With a sheepish smile, I blushed at the memory of that night at the party, how Richard and I had a great conversation and how he had offered to give me his clothes. I told Rosie about it the day after the party. What I did not tell her was about Richard's past, I felt that it was not right if I told others about it.
