The Japanese word for money is okane(お金). The currency that is used in Japan is yen but in Japanese it is pronounced en(円). For the countries that use american dollar, yen is always rounded up/down because yen is not exactly equal. Here are some estimated numbers.

1円=1 cent 100円=$1
1000円=$10 10000円=$100

If you go to Japan it is very important to not use english pronounciation of the numbers because they are not used in Japanese currency. Couning money is the same as counting numbers!

Once the numbers are up to 10000 they are counted in groups of ten thousands. Which is man(万). The extra zeros are not usually written.

For english speakers it is easier to count in groups of hundreds when they get to larger numbers. Because 1万 is almost equal to $100 or 13万 is similar to $1300(thirteen hundred).

As proven in the last lesson, Japanese numbers can be difficult and hard getting used to but fortunatly most regesters in Japan are digital so they will show you the price to must pay.

The polite form of suru is used to express how much something cost.

いくらですか?-how much is it?

Coins,bills, and paying

Most people in Japan use cash (genkin現金) to pay instead a debit card. There are 6 coins that are used in Japan.

And there are 4 types of bills in Japan.

2000円 is rare so most vending machine will not except them. Some store will also not except them. When you pay in Japan it is very common to see a small tray next to the regester. It is there to put your money in instead of handing it to the clerk. Most of the time the clerk will just hand you the change but sometime the clerk will put it on the tray for you to take it yourself.
