London chapter 1
"Hey! How's New York?" My best friend Bailee's voice squealed excitedly through my cell phone. I laughed, "Bailee I just got here like two hours ago." "So? How's the people? The city? The food? Oh my god did you see any celebrities? If you see Taylor swift please tell her about me! You're starting school tomorrow wow I can't believe it! Century high! The number one private school on this freaking planet. You have to call me every five minutes okay? Tell me about all the gossip here, all the fashion trends, the students-" "I will Bailee, but really I haven't seen anything yet. I only just came home from the airport and I think I fell asleep when we took the bus to my new house." "You mean your new mansion," Bailee corrected. "No really it's not a mansion." "Uhuh." Bailee said, unconvinced.
"Well anyways I have to help my mom unpack, I'll call you tonight?" I said, glancing down at the millions of cardboard boxes sitting in every corner of my new home. "Yes! Bye London!" And the line went dead.
I started opening boxes, sorting through all the junk we brought from my old home back in Vancouver. But the junk were mostly lawyer books, and lawyer books, and more lawyer books.
Yep, both my parents are famous lawyers. They've won over many cases, and gets about ten thousand people lining up for them everyday. My grandparents from both my parents' sides were also famous lawyers, in fact, my parents met each other at lawyer school where they fell in love and got married and had me.
So as you can see I'm probably going to become a future lawyer too.
I ripped open another cardboard box and took out a lamp and placed it on the ground beside me. "London!" My dad said, rushing into the room, "what are you doing?" "I'm sorting through stuff, dad. I've made a stack of your lawyer books over here and I placed all the lightings there and that stack is for the paintings you collected and here's some of the kitchenware." I said, pointing at the neatly stacked piles I've made. "Okay good I know I can rely on you London." My dad said, looking tired and worn out. "Where's my boxes?" "They're outside. Mom and I are bringing them in soon, just keep unpacking." I dug through the box deeper and took out my mother's old jewelry box, "dad where do I put this?" I asked. I knew this box was very precious to my family, it's been passed down our family for generations.
"Put it by the-" my dad's cell phone rang, he answered it and walked outside. I looked back at the jewlery box. It was made of antique red wood with a rose carved on the lid. A glittering red jewel sits beside the gold keyhole. This box is more than two hundred years old, yet it still looked as good as new.
I've never opened the jewelry box before. My mother is the only one with the key. She won't let me see what's inside and hides the key, she said she will pass it down to me when I'm ready. "Ready for what?" Six year old me had asked curiously. But my mother just smiled, "you will understand soon, London."
Soon we had unpacked most boxes except for the ones for our bedrooms. My mother had a mini heart attack when she realized her precious jewelry box wasn't in any of her boxes. "Oh my god where is it? I cannot lose it!" I pointed at the box sitting nicely between the bubble wrap. "It's there mom I found it with the box of kitchenware." "That's strange I swear I packed it in my boxes."
I never thought it was weird my mom freaked out she couldn't find the jewelry box, but I figured it was probably because of how long it's been in the family, and she doesn't want to be the one who breaks the tradition of passing it down to her child.
"Good job today we almost got everything unpacked! I'll go order some takeout." My dad said before leaving the house. My mom went upstairs to her and my dad's room to unpack some more, but I didn't. We got so much done today I'll just do mine tomorrow, besides, I was tired from unpacking so many boxes anyway.
So instead I called Bailee on my laptop, who answered very quickly. "Hey girl!" She said, her face filling my screen. "I swear if I have to unpack another box I'll throw all the boxes out the window." I said, rubbing my wrist tiredly. Bailee giggled and started saying something, when her face suddenly became frozen on my screen.
I shook the laptop, it wasn't working. "This is weird." I muttered to myself. I couldn't shut it down either. Bailee's grinning face stayed on my screen and I took that moment to look at her and me in the bottom corner of the screen.
I've always thought Bailee was pretty. She had naturally ombre hair and blue eyes that seems to pop out whenever she puts on her pink lipgloss. Me? Not so much. I inspected my frozen face on the bottom of the screen, my blonde hair simple and boring, my hazel eyes staring at the screen, and my lips curled into a snarl.
Wait a second, a snarl? I wasn't snarling at Bailee.
I shook the laptop, and the screen went black.
I shuddered, closed my laptop and walked upstairs.
