London chapter 6
"London we need to talk." My mom sighed, walking into my room. "Have you ever heard of knocking?" I muttered. "I know you are mad at me darling, and I'm sorry for not warning you about the disappearance until the very last second. You are also mad at me that I moved us here to New York but you have to know that this is what we think is best for you. Century high isn't just rated the number one private school for no reason. We thought a fresh start would be good for you." "But clearly you are wrong." I said. My mom shook her head, "no London. We don't know that yet. It's only been one day. You have to give this school a chance! If you walk in there and think negatively of everything, then it will become negative. What happened to Jessie Saunders was a horrible tragedy but people move on in life. They won't mourn her forever. Just give the school some time, and patience. You will see how wonderful this school actually is."
"Why do you talk about her like she's dead?" I asked suddenly. My mom stopped, "what?" "Everyone talks about her like she's dead but the police never found her body or discovered what happened so why do you all assume she's dead?" "Well honey of course she's dead I mean she's been missing for a week-" my mom stammered lamely but I cut her off, "people have gone missing for years and no one talked about them like they were dead. So why Jessie?" I said quietly, "is it because how terrible she was? That it's easier to think she's dead then to think she might be coming back soon? Was she really that horrible?"
My mom didn't answer. She stood up and walked out of my room but stopped at the door, "here's a piece of advice for you London. If you want to survive century high, then remember that the least you know, the better. Because they don't like nosy people. They'll get rid of you. We'll get rid of you." Then she slammed the door shut.
I froze, why did my mom refer herself as the people at century high? And... Did my own mother just threatened to kill me?
Did my mom go to century high? I thought back. My mother attended a high school in Vancouver from grade ten to twelve. But... Where was she during grade eight and nine? At century high? Did my father know? Was this the reason why we moved here? So I could attend the same school my mother did?
So many questions. My brain feels hazy and confused and I decided to go to sleep for now. I'll figure it out tomorrow, I will.
I crawl into bed and drifts off into a dreamless long sleep.
