Finally – Chuck

*

A lot the guys in the Glade dreamed about a girl coming up in the Box. It was all they wanted. Some of the Gladers even sent a message down in the Box to the Creators asking for one... or a few. And finally, after years, a girl came up in the Box, but she was a little younger than what they were asking.

She was probably around thirteen or fourteen years old. To say most of the Gladers were disappointed was a bit of an understatement. A good number of them wanted a girlfriend, but their egos were too big to date a thirteen-year-old.

But there was one Glader that wasn't that bummed about it– the youngest of the forty. Chuck was pretty ecstatic to have a friend his age, and a girl nonetheless. And since he'd been the Greenie before her, he got to show her around.

"So, uh, this is the Homestead. It's usually where all the meetings are held and everything. There'll be one later today so the Keepers can figure out what job to give you. We've never had a girl before, so they're all kinda stumped on what to do," he said, gesturing to the Homestead.

"From what I've seen, they all hate me," she said, still nervous about where she was.

"Nah," Chuck dismissed, waving his hand, "they don't hate you; they're just cautious is all. I mean, I don't hate you."

At that, the girl smiled. It wasn't much of a compliment when you thought about it, but she was glad to know at least one person was on her side. "Thanks Chuck," she said, grinning happily.

After that, Chuck continued to show her around the Glade. He showed her the Deadheads, the lookout point, the animal pens and more and explained all the jobs to her. Before either of them even knew it, it was sundown and that meant it was time for the Gathering.

Chuck led the way over to the back of the crowd with the girl following him. He could tell she was growing more and more anxious, so he tried to keep a conversation going to distract her from it. "Everyone, quiet down," Alby called out to the other Gladers.

They were all sitting in a group on the floor, while the Keepers were all sitting around one large, wooden table.

"We're here to figure out what to do with the girl. Where is she?" Newt said, surveying the crowd.

The girl looked to Chuck nervously. He nodded and gave her a reassuring smile, telling her to stand up. When Newt saw her, he gestured for her to come down to where the Keepers were so everyone could see her. After clumsily making her way through the crowd, she stood between Alby and Newt in front of everyone.

"We can rule out Runner, Builder, Slicer or Cook," Frypan said from where he was sitting.

Alby turned to him and gave him a confused look. "Why wouldn't she be a Cook?" he asked.

Fry gestured to the girl and furrowed his brows, once again bringing the attention back on her. "You kidding me? She doesn't even look like she could crack an egg let alone prepare three meals a day for forty people."

"Medjack?"

"I wouldn't trust her with a needle."

"Track Hoe?"

"I don't want her either."

"Fine then, Alby said after most of the jobs had been called out. He turned to the girl again. "Starting tomorrow, you're a Slopper. You start at dawn." He then turned to everyone else in the Homestead and put his hands on his hips. "Everyone else, go get dinner.

Everyone hurried out of the Homestead as fast as they could to get their food first. The girl lingered behind, unsure of what to do. When she found Chuck again, she went with him.

"Sorry they made you a Slopper. It's not that fun," Chuck said, kicking at the grass.

"It's fine, I guess," the girl said nonchalantly. She turned to smile at Chuck. "At least I get to work with you."

The two of them left the Homestead to get food of their own, Chuck smiling at the thought that maybe life in the Glade wouldn't be as bad as he thought.
