CHAPTER FIVE: “I PROMISE”
It was a Thursday evening and a very long day for Azania. She loved photography but she hated dealing with some models and their bad attitudes. Even though she has been in the industry for a while and had made a name for herself, as a female photographer, no make that a black female photographer, she always had someone who tried to test her patience. Today was one of those days. In the past she had to act a fool to get results but since she was the one who signed people’s paychecks, if anyone dared to disrespect her or question her ability as a photographer she simply took her business somewhere else and contacted another agency to send through new models so she can get the job done. A lot of other people would have let it slide but if there was one thing that she did not tolerate is any form of abuse to her or her staff. She would rather be delayed instead of dealing with disrespectful cows and that is exactly why they were a few hours behind schedule. Her feet hurt, she felt cranky and tired. Right now all she wanted was to get home, take a hot shower and enjoy a nice home cooked meal before she passed out in her bed. The day had been far too long for her. She has been on set before the break of dawn with the rest of her crew which consisted of her makeup artists, hairstylists and the guys who do the setup for her. It was 8pm and her bed was calling her name. ‘Hopefully we will be done in the next hour’ she thought to herself as she waited for one of the model’s makeup to be touched up.
“Let’s take five” Azania said to the models and the rest of the crew when her phone rang for a second time. It could be urgent and they were due for a break anyway. She was not a slave driver.
“Hey daddy” she answered quickly before it went to voicemail.
“Hey Princess, how are you?”
“I am well and how are you?”
“I am well thanks. This is not a social call, I need you to handle something for me. You remember that old warehouse downtown that belonged to your grandfather?”
“Yes daddy, what about it?”
“Well I got a call from the estate agency, there has been some developments taking place in the area and some people might be interested in it.”
“Ok....so what do you need me to do?”
“I need you to handle all business aspects of the property. I’m an old man and the last thing that I want to do is spend my time doing business. I want to enjoy my time with your momma.”
“No problem. Do you want to sell or rent the property?”
“You can do whatever you want to with it, I trust your judgement.”
“Ok daddy. My five minute break is almost over, I have to get back on set.”
“We will talk later then. I already gave your number to the agency to give to the relevant contact person. All calls will be directed to you. Bye baby, love you.”
“Love you too.”
**********
“Honey I’m home” Azania said out loud when she walked into her empty apartment. It was after 10pm and she was just happy that they got the job done. They worked hard and the pictures came out great. Her client will indeed be very happy with their work.
She closed the door behind her and locked it before putting her bag and equipment on the dining room table. Most people would say it was too late to eat at this hour but she was hungry. As she opened the fridge, she couldn’t help but smile as she saw that Amber had brought over a home cooked meal for her, which consisted of grilled veggies, mashed potatoes and steak topped off with some garlic and butter sauce. That’s right, Amber had a key to her apartment and she had a key to her condo and it was on days like these that she did not mind Amber using her key at all. She appreciated Amber but it’s on days like these that she really appreciated Amber.
