CHAPTER TWENTY TWO: “PMS-ing”

She was a sucker for punishment but she had no idea what to do without coming across as rude. She wanted to confess her feelings every time she was in the same space as DeAndre and today was no different. He unceremonially invited himself over to her apartment when she said she was not feeling well. She really was not feeling well. She had gotten her period and unfortunately for her, the first day was always her worst day. Everything hurt and she usually spent the day in bed fighting the pain with painkillers and a hot water bottle. She hated that he came over to play the role of an unofficial boyfriend. Well she loved that he was so considerate but she hated the aftermath of what it did to her heart. Like right now.

“What’s wrong Azania?” he asked checking her temperature for the second time.

“I’m just not feeling well.” She did not feel comfortable to tell him that she was on her period, they were not that close to be sharing such personal information.

“Have you eaten anything?” he asked while going through a bag. I brought you some flu medicine, pain killers, tissues and chicken noodle soup.”

“I don’t have flu DeAndre and shouldn’t you be at work?” she asked looking at her watch and his attire. He was dressed in some sweatpants and a t-shirt. It was just 11a.m.

“I am working from home but you are not feeling well and so I came to check up on you.”

“I appreciate the concern but it’s not that serious. You can go back home to work” she said before leaving him in the foyer and heading to her bedroom. She had barely managed to drag herself to the door, so caring about how she looked was the last thing on her mind. She woke up this morning, took a quick shower and put on some pj’s. And that’s how she answered the door, in a pj’s and head wrap. That’s how DeAndre saw her and she was in too much pain to care.

She heard the door close as she settled in her bed. He was gone. Or so she thought before she heard footsteps coming towards her room. A few seconds later he knocked on her door before he entered.

He sat on the edge of her bed and pulled back the covers to reveal her face. “I’m not leaving until you tell me what’s wrong. Are you in pain from the attack?”

She could see the worry in his eyes. His forehead was creased with concern.

“No DeAndre, it’s not that” she said trying to ease his mind.

“You’re in some sort of pain, I can clearly see that from the perspiration that’s on your face. I’m going to take you to the hospital so-”

“I’m on my period!” she blurted out. There she said it. He was going on and on and she just wants to curl up in a ball. The pain is more bearable that way.

“Oh…” he simply replied.

She reached for the covers and pulled them over her head again. She felt him getting up from the bed and heard him walk out of the room. A few minutes later she felt the blanket being pulled away for her face once again. The bed dipped as he sat down on the edge of the bed, the spot that he vacated only a few minutes ago.

“You have to eat” he simply said when she gave him the death glare.

“I already ate and took some medication” she replied.

“What did you have?”

“An apple this morning.”

“An apple is not a solid meal, you need to eat something solid” he said handing her the bowl of soup that he must have warmed up.
