Chapter Five

I lay in my bed, anxiously awaiting the moment I needed to go.  Marnie and Louisa both lay beside me, their eyes closed.  I'd told them they had to stay awake, but make it look like they were asleep, so they didn't get in trouble.  They didn't ask questions, and just did as I asked, which I was grateful for.  I'd told Aaron's plan to Rachel, who didn't think it would work, but agreed to give it a shot.  The sound on boots on mud became louder, as finally a guard checked our tent.  I quickly shut my eyes as they poked their heads in, scanned the tent, then resumed their patrol.  As soon as they had walked away, I quietly nudged the girls, and we silently crept out of the tent.  Rachel scooped the sleepy Belle up, and followed silently behind me and the other girls.  I poked my head into every tent we passed, but my parents were nowhere to be seen.  We stayed on the opposite side of the tents to the patrols, and carried on towards Aaron's tent.  As we neared Aaron's tent, and I still hadn't found my parents, my hope lowered and lowered.  They weren't here.  I'd looked in all of the tents, except the few at the top, but Aaron said they wouldn't be in there.  Rachel tapped on Aaron's tent, and he immediately popped out.  He smiled slightly at me and his mum, before crouching, and walking towards the wire fence that surrounded the camp.  We followed quickly, and watched as he scanned the ground by the fence.  He knelt by a grass patch, and pulled away the turf, revealing a small hole.  It seemed big enough for all of us, as long as we went through one by one.  Belle went first, followed by Louisa and Marnie, then Rachel climbed under and ushered the girls into the bushes to stay out of sight.  I insisted that Aaron went next, and when he was safely through, I cocked my head for him to come closer.  He frowned confused, and knelt by the fence.

"What are you doing?  Come on!"  He hissed.  I bit my lip, and glanced at the girls.

"Look after them, I need to get my parents." I whispered, and ran back to the camp, without looking back.  As I ran, I heard the quiet voices of Marnie and Louisa, asking why I wasn't coming.  I ducked behind a tree, to stay away from view of the guards, and quickly scanned around.  I noticed a large red tent, which, apart from the guard's tents, was the only one I hadn't checked.  Silently, I slipped through the trees, and ran behind the red tent.  I pressed my ear to the fabric, and heard muffled voices.  It was only when I peeped  through did I realise that it was my parents.  My heart skipped a beat as I saw them, alive and well, and I was just about to grab them when I noticed another figure with them...a figure with a broken jaw and bruised face.  My heart dropped as I realised the boss was with them.  I kept watching, and listening to what the boss was saying to them.

"Your daughter, she's quite feisty isn't she?  I like feisty girls." He chuckled.  My dad pursed his lips, and clenched his fists.  If he wasn't tied down, with guns pointed at him, I'm sure he would not have hesitated to punch the boss.  The boss leaned in to my dad, and spoke quietly.  "If you don't tell me what you know, I WILL kill her in front of you, and those little kids that are with her."  He threatened, and I could tell he wasn't bluffing.  A pained whimper escaped my mums lips, as tears trickled down her face.  Her eyes glanced at where I was, and her face lost all colour.  She silently, and very discretely mouthed 'GO' to me.  I shook my head, and more tears fell down her face.  It broke my heart to see her like this, but I couldn't leave without them.

"Don't touch my girls, kill me instead." Dad tried to sound calm, but his voice broke.  The boss laughed.

"I won't kill you!  You two are the only ones who know a damn thing about that bloody light, that destroyed everything!" He scoffed, and my mouth dropped open.  They knew something? Suddenly, two arms wrapped around my waist, and pulled me into the undergrowth.  I struggled against them, as tears formed in my eyes.  They knew...

Aaron held me down, so we couldn't be seen, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get out on his grasp.

"We need to leave." He whispered in my ear.  In my heart, I knew it was true, but I didn't want to leave them.  "Right now, with all those guns, you have no chance.  If we leave, get enough supplies and weapons, we'll come back and get your parents, I promise." He said.  I looked up at him, and his face was serious, but how can he promise such a thing?

"Don't make promises you can't keep." I said, my voice breaking.  Aaron gently wiped the tears from my face, and smiled slightly.

"But I will keep it." He said, and hugged me tighter.  I sniffed, and looked up at the red tent.  I was so close to them, it was like torture to be this close, and still be helpless.  Aaron gently pulled me up, and when the guards had walked past, slipped his hand into mine and we ran to the fence.  This time, he made me go through first, and when he was through, we took off.  Louisa leapt into my arms as we ran, and hugged me so tightly I couldn't breath.

"I thoughted you leaved us!" She said quietly.  I hugged her back.

"I wouldn't do that." I replied, "Now loosen up, you're choking me." I said lightly.  Louisa did, but still didn't fully release me, for fear that I'd run off again.

We carried on running for a good fifteen minutes, but by then we were completely out of breath, and had to stop.  Marnie sat down with her head between her knees, taking deep breaths, as did the rest of us.  Louisa and Belle on the other hand were both fine, as they'd been carried.  After a few minutes of calming down, and regaining our breath, we stood again and carried on walking.  We needed to get as far away from the camp as possible.  As we walked, I couldn't get the idea that my parents knew something about the light out of my head.  What did they know?  Did they know it was going to happen?  Could they have done anything to stop it?  All these questions soared around my head, and it didn't seem like they were going to stop.

I didn't know how long we walked for, but eventually Rachel insisted we climb a tree and sleep for the night.  I didn't think there'd be much night-time left, we'd been walking for a long time.  Marnie scaled the tree first, and sat on a big branch, pulling Louisa and Belle up too.  Rachel climbed next, and went a couple of branches higher, before I climbed up and lifted Belle and Louisa to Rachel's branch.  I climbed up and sat on the same large branch as Louisa and Marnie, who both cuddled up to me quickly. I untied my belt, and tied it around all of us, attaching us firmly to the branch.  Luckily for us, the belt was far too big for me, so it just about made it around us and the branch.  Marnie and Louisa both instantly fell asleep, so did Belle who was snuggled up to Rachel.  Rachel drifted off too, leaving me and Aaron staring up at the dark sky.  I couldn't sleep, not when I knew that my parents were still stuck in that camp.

"Hey, not tired?" Aaron whispered from the branch beside me.

"Shattered." I replied, smiling slightly.  He nodded knowingly.

"You thinking about your parents?" He asked quietly, and I nodded. "Don't worry too much, you heard the boss, he's not going to kill them - they're obviously of some use, and as long as they don't tell him anything, he'll keep them alive." He said, trying to make me feel better.  I nodded again, hopefully they'll be kept alive long enough for us to get some sort of weapon and get them out of there.
