Chapter Fourteen
Today was basically the same as the previous day, but we were also tried out with sniper rifles. We were allowed one shot each, because ammunition was precious and difficult to make. Mitch took us up to the top of the warehouse, on the roof, and instructed us to lie on our stomachs, and rest the sniper on the small tripod. He said he'd laid out three target sheets within a mile radius of the warehouse. We were to shoot one each. Aaron and Zayne both went straight to the sniper's viewfinder, but I decided to trust my own vision first, and I was right to, because I spotted a small white circular piece of paper by a tree. I aimed my sniper roughly, and then looked into the viewfinder. Everything was so zoomed in! I found my target, aimed at the centre, and was about to pull the trigger when there was a bang beside me, which made me jump. Aaron had shot his target, and was beaming with pride. I sighed, annoyed that I'd lost my concentration, and quickly went to find the target again. I found it almost immediately, aimed, and pulled the trigger. Then we had to wait whilst Zayne kept looking for his target. After nearly ten minutes, he found it and we were allowed to go back in. For the rest of the day, we learnt how to walk stealthily. That was quite fun, but tiring. I started to walk back to the room where I slept, when I felt an arm pull me to one side. I looked up, expecting to see Aaron, but instead Zayne's face replaced him. I tugged my arm away, and tried to leave but he stopped me by standing in the way.
"Please just hear me out." He begged me, making me sigh. I just wanted to go to sleep! I nodded reluctantly, hoping that he'd be quick so I could go to bed.
"Ok, I'm really sorry about the kiss, it's just that I really like you." He said, running his hand through his hair nervously. "I really think I could make you happy, if you gave me a chance." He told me quietly, staring at the floor.
"Zayne, I can't. I'm with Aaron now." I sighed, my gaze falling to the floor too. Zayne nodded slowly.
"Are you happy with him?" He asked me, this time looking into my eyes.
"Yes." I said quietly, and he nodded.
"Ok. Well can we at least be friends again?" He asked me hopefully, and I smiled slightly.
"OK." I smiled. We stood there in an awkward silence for a few minutes, before I announced I was going to bed.
I walked into the room I shared with the other girls, and fell onto my bed.
"Rough day?" Devon asked from the bed beside me. I groaned in reply as I buried myself under the duvet. I rolled over to face her: Her natural blonde hair was quite dirty, and a little tangled, she had dust and dirt on her face, her clothes and her hands.
"What are they making you do?" I frowned.
"Cooking, cleaning." Devon shrugged, yawning. "What about you?"
"Shooting, Stealth." I said, imitating her bored voice, which made her smile slightly. I yawned and rolled back over, my eyes closing as I drifted off to sleep.
I walked slowly, silently, in the slightly crouched position that Mitch had taught us, through the building. The smell of smoke from the chimneys was just as strong inside, which made me gag a little. Nevertheless, I kept on moving. I held the rifle in my hand in the shooting position, in case anybody got in my way. We came to a set of corridors, and had to split up. Aaron went down on, Zayne went down another, and I went down the middle one. I stayed in the shadows as I crept along the dimly lit corridor, in the hope that this was the one that led to my sisters. To my surprise, the corridor led outside, into the forest. Despite this, I carried on, picking my pace up a little. I reached a clearing that I knew all too well, and my heart started hammering in my chest. I peered through the bushes and saw Marshall holding his prized whip, and repeatedly bringing it down on someone. It wasn't until I looked closer that I realised it was Marnie. I stood up, aimed my gun and shot Marshall five times, square in the head...but my bullets were no use. I kept shooting him, but it did absolutely nothing. I growled in frustration, and ran over towards Marnie. Surprisingly, no-one tried to stop me. I pulled her away, and Marshall frowned at me. He threw his whip on the floor, and reached in his back pocket. He drew out his pistol, but instead of aiming it at me, he aimed it somewhere to the right, and shot. I heard a grunt, and my legs buckled as I saw Aaron's body hit the floor.
