Chapter  Fifteen

The sniper leader replied saying they were ready, all we had to do now was wait until the shot was fired.

And then we'd go.

The sniper rifles had silencers on them, so it wasn't until I saw the two guards' bodies fall lifelessly to the floor that I realised we needed to go.  I followed James and Zayne as they ran to the main building, with my gun loaded and my eyes scanning for attackers.  We made it to the factory without being shot at, so Zayne and James pulled the two guards' bodies into the bushes.  I steadied my gun, which was difficult because I couldn't stop my hands from shaking.  The thought that my sisters were in the same building as me gave me a small amount of confidence to keep going, but it didn't stop me from being scared.  Zayne gave me a reassuring smile before James signalled for us to move in.  I took a deep breath to calm my nerves, before following them into the factory.  Now inside, we didn't have the cover of the snipers - we were on our own.  I pushed that thought out of my mind as we pressed on.  We were walking along a large corridor that offered no cover whatsoever.  We'd be in a bit of a pickle of one of the factory workers walked by now.  At the end of the corridor, there was a door, but it had a pad in the shape of a hand next to it.  James cursed under his breath, obviously annoyed that they didn't think this through very well.  There was a noise coming from the other end of the corridor, where we'd just come from...the sound of footsteps.  We all slipped into the shadows by the walls, and hoped that our dark clothes offered some camouflage.  The fact that the corridor was poorly lit worked to our advantage.  I could just make out the outline of a worker placing his hand on the sensor, then it beeped and the door opened.  As he stepped through, I pulled out my pistol and wedged it in the door, preventing it from closing.  James smiled at me, nodding a well done.  I smiled back slightly before slipping back out of the shadows and gently pushing the door.  Thankfully, there was nobody on the other side, so we passed through unnoticed.  We were now in an even larger corridor, which was still as dark.  There were four doors lining the left wall, each numbered.  I paid each number no attention as I proceeded to open the first door.  It was locked.  I tried the second, somewhat harder.  Also locked.  James hissed at me to be quieter, but I ignored him as I tried the third door.  The fourth door didn’t open either, so I stepped back, shut my eyes and shot at it (I’d seen it done on TV).

“NO!” James shouted, but it was too late.  Most of the bullets ricocheted off the metal door, and bounced around the corridor.  We all hit the floor in an attempt to avoid being hit.  The bullets then dropped all around us, and I quickly stood up again.

“Anybody hurt?” James whispered (I don’t know why he whispered, if there was someone nearby they would have heard the shots).  Zayne and I nodded.  I smiled though as I noticed I’d broken the lock on the fourth door – it was now slightly ajar.  I marched forwards, and without thinking I went in.  It was dark inside, but I could hear the muffled sound of breathing.  I turned the light on my gun on, and pointed it around the room.  My heart skipped a beat when I saw my sisters’ faces staring up at me.  My initial reaction was to run across the room, scoop them up and then get out.  But as I ran across the room, I noticed that something was very wrong.  Why hadn’t they reacted to us entering?  They both just sat on the floor and watched me, their faces completely emotionless.  I stopped in from of them, but didn’t know what to say.  Marnie tilted her head up slightly.

“Who are you?” She asked quietly.  My knees buckled and I fell in front of them.  She didn’t recognise me...

“It’s Charlotte.  Your sister.” My voice broke as their faces remained blank.

“We need to go.” James hissed at me from the other side of the room.  I nodded numbly as I lifted Louisa onto my back, and took Marnie’s hand.  Zayne found Belle and Tom, whislt James guided some children I’d never seen before out.
