I stared at him for what felt like ages, silence filling the room. How could I not remember him? We used to hang out every day, but then again I was young and I can barely remember what I had for breakfast this morning. "Is everything okay guys?" We both looked at Alice to see worry on her face.
"Everything is fine," Mason smiles at her before looking back at me. "Can I talk to you in private?" I nodded as I followed him into a room which I am guessing was his since there was clothes thrown everywhere and posters shoved up on the walls. I watched as he walked over to the bed, sitting down before lying back and placing his hands over his face. I stood there awkwardly after closing the door. I looked around and I hugged myself. "You can come sit down," I heard him laugh before he lifted his hands from his face and looked over at me. I slowly made my way over to the bed and sat next to him. "Did you know who I was?" he asked, sitting up and looking at me.
"No," I replied, playing with my fingers. Why am I feeling so nervous!?
"Don't you find it funny that we both don't remember each other?"
"Well we were pretty young when we last saw each other. Plus we probably look so much different since back then."
"Yeah that's true," he laughed. "If I show you something, do you promise not to freak out?"
"Okay?" I finally looked up at him to see him reaching into his back pocket, pulling out his wallet. He pulled out a photo, sighing before handing it over to me. I took it and placed my hand over my mouth once I saw what it was. It was me and him, young, happy and holding hands while hugging. We looked so happy in this photo, like nothing could tear us apart in that moment.
"Where did you get this?" I asked, still not taking my eyes off of it.
"I've had it since I can remember, it just never clicked that that little girl grew into someone like you."
"Why do you still have this? Doesn't your girlfriend crack the shits when she see's it?"
"Because it reminds me that I once was so happy, like I was on top of the world and I didn't want to let that memory go. She hates it, tried to burn it at one point but now she just gives up."
"Why are you with her?" I asked, looking down. He's too lovely to be with such a bitch.
"I don't know really. When I met her online she was so nice, so polite and now that I am physically with her, she's the complete opposite to what I thought she was."
"Leave her then?"
"I want to, trust me, but I don't have the heart to do it."
"Well you don't deserve to be treated like a slave, it's so wrong and you deserve so much better!"
"I love this," he chuckled, looking at me.
"What?"
"It feels like we were never separated, like we've always been friends. It just feels natural and normal sitting here with you, talking about my problems."
"I feel the same," I laughed.
"And you're right, I do deserve better."
"Afternoon tea is ready!" I heard Alice call out to us from the kitchen.
"Coming Mum!" Mason called back, rolling his eyes. "Come on," he stood up and held out his hand for me, without hesitation, I took it with my own and allowed him to help me up. We walked into the kitchen to see sandwiches and snacks set out in the lounge room.
"Wow," I laughed as I sat down next to Mason on the couch.
"Make yourself at home. We have a spare room set up for you for tonight and plenty of food. Just call out to me if you need anything else."
