As I walked outside I breathed the fresh air in. Back home in Ohio I had never been surrounded by nature quite like this. Ohio was mainly hills and green farmland in the part that I grew up with. Here there were trees and trees and dirt roads as far as I could see. The giant creatures cast a shadow on the ground as sunlight softly filtered through the leaves. It was beautiful. The nerves on my body were tingling as though I was being welcomed back to my home that had missed me so dearly. It was like my body was electrified and my senses were on fire. Everything was intensified. As I studied the woods I had just barely stepped into, I kept walking at a slow pace. I could hear and see everything.
The bird that had just taken flight several feet in front of me, the twig that snapped under what I assumed was a deer about ten trees away from me. I had never experienced so many colors before! All of the lights that exploded in front of me shone like the heavens had opened the door for me. What was this? My legs felt wobbly as I carried on into the forest, not caring that I couldn't see the shadow of the house anymore.
I don't know how long I looked at my surroundings and the light around me, but before I knew it the sun was meeting the horizon and the birds were on their last flight before settling down for the night. A chill went through me even though it wasn't that could out. I had sat down on a fallen tree and was studying the ants that had made it home. I looked up, my auburn hair falling past my shoulders at my movement. Home was to my left, right? I stood and stretched, rubbing my stiff neck in the process and started walking in the direction I assumed my new home was. After a few moments I stopped. This wasn't right. Nothing had looked familiar yet nothing looked different.
I'm lost.
Panic struck me as I twirled around, the woods a hazy dusk color.
"DAD!" I hollered, frightening myself and a few night animals around me. My heart raced. I tried hollering again before I took stomping off through the brush. Surely if I keep walking I'd run into civilization somewhere along the road.
I don"t know how long I'd walked for until I went to wipe a cobweb off my face. Tears streaked my hand and I saw I had been crying. Oh hell. This is just lovely, I thought. I sat down in a huff and held my face in my hands as more tears leaked out. I was dirty and tired after spending the day wandering the woods. Then I heard a twig snap right behind me. I jumped to my feet and whirled around. The woods were silence. Not a noise was to be heard.
"Dad..," I whispered softly, hoping to not startle whatever had made the noise. Hopefully it's not a hunter. That would just be my luck. I could see the front page of the paper now:
Teenage girl lost in woods, shot dead by mistake
Adrenaline pulsed my veins as I felt eyes watching me. Another twig snapped to my right this time. I flicked my head in the direction. A soft growl was sounded to my left. No. Not an animal, please no!
I stared closer into the brush and that was when I saw them.
Eyes.
A lot of eyes at that.
They were all spaced in front of me. The eyes were all unblinking as they were directed straight at me. Goosebumps rose on my arms. The second one of the eyes moved, I ran.
I ran so fast, I wasn't sure it was actually my legs beneath me. Pounding sounded behind me as whatever animals I had just seen followed in hot pursuit. My legs burned as I pushed them but I didn't stop. I jumped whatever fallen trees I could see but pretty soon I was in pitch darkness. I slowed and then eventually altogether stopped. Despite wanting to catch my breath, I held it. I didn't hear anything. Before I could react, the shape of an animals stepped in from the side right in front of me. It's eyes shone a brilliant blue as they stared me down and I heard a lower, feral growl escape its lips.
And that was it.
My head got light and the world around me ceased to exist as my body fell into unconsciousness.
