It was now four in the afternoon. My dorm mates should be arriving shortly. Patiently I sat poised on the sofa, waiting their arrival. Nerves had my heel tapping repetitively against the floor as my fingers twirled my hair. A sudden rattling of the door alerted me to their arrival, pulling me from my nerve induced trance. Dragging myself from the sofa, I stood, patiently waiting, as the first of the five entered the room.
His fluid Grey eyes scanned the room before taking me in. Glancing from me to the room allocation sheet in his had he looked up and down again a few more times before giving up and attempting to ask me what I was doing there.
"Uh, um, y-y-you're a Gir-r-rl"
His stutter was immediately evident.
"Huh, so I am.” I smiled in what I hoped was a welcoming way. “I'm Janine, the principles daughter. You can call me Nean."
"O-o-oh so the rumors are t-true then."
"Uh I guess so. You may want to take that room their.” I pointed to the one next to mine, “It's the only single left."
"T-t-thanks." With that he picked up his left over luggage and headed to the room to unpack.
My overall first impression of him was that of shy and nerdy. His shoulders slumped into a hidden reserve. He hadn't even got his name out. I made a mental note to ask him for it later. With all this taken in I still couldn't help but notice he wasn't overly ugly. In fact he was quite pleasant looking.
With that the door once again rattled with the sound of approach.
"Damn, what do we have here?"
This time two boys stood in the door way. Both tall and buff looking. One Dark drown haired and the other a dusty blonde.
"What you have here is the principles daughter and your new room mate. Hey I'm Nean. Short for Janine." I held out my hand to shake.
“Warren," The darker haired boy replied, wrapping his arms around me in an embracing hug.
"Uh, let go please." His forward flirtatiousness made me uncomfortable. I took a sharp step backward.
"Sorry, you don't know how long we've been waiting for some decent eye candy around here."
"Uh let's just not make a habit of it okay. At least until I know you better."
"Right."
"I'm Michael by the way." Finally the blonde spoke up.
"Nice to meet you Michael." I said as I shook his hand.
Michael and Warren both took brief glances at each other before screaming "SHOTGUN THE SINGLE!"
"Sorry someone already has it." Disappointment shone over their faces,
"Who?"
"Uh, I didn't get his name. He was kinda shy."
"Daniel?"
The boy poked his head out the door. "Yeah?"
"Wanna' swap rooms with me?"
"Uh I, Uh, n-n-not really."
"Come on D, I thought we were mates?"
Warren's obvious bullying struck a raw nerve with me.
"He got here first do he gets the single. Deal with it."
Shock washed across Warren's face as I stood up for Daniel.
"Danny doesn't mind, do ya' D?" He shot him a quick wink and a charming smile.
"Yes, he does. Leave him alone and take whats still available before the others show."
Daniel shot me a wide smile before slipping back into his room.
"Why'd you do that. He's a nerd. He doesn't need a room all to himself."
"Leave him alone. Just because you're more popular than him doesn't mean you can control him."
"Loosen up would ya'. It's just a room."
"Same back at you."
With that he scoffed his way over to his bags before picking the up and lugging them into his room. Michael turned to me.
"Sorry about him, he's a bit of a dick sometimes."
"It's fine. I just get really bugged by people who use their popularity to push people around."
"Yeah, this schools pretty bad for that kind of stuff. You know, like the rich kid comes out tops."
"Yeah, great."
"Kay well I'll see you at dinner?"
"Yeah. Have fun unpacking."
"Will do."
I had to wait much longer for the next room mate to arrive. When the door opened a third time I was greeted by a medium height, golden blonde boy with dark blue eyes.
"Hey I'm Carter. You must be Janine?" Carter's face was round, smooth and appealingly gorgeous.
"Yeah. But just call me Nean."
"Right, I'm guessing the single's taken all ready?"
"Yeah. Sorry."
"No prob. Who’s in our dorm so far by the way?"
"Uh, I think they said his name was Daniel. He's in the single. Then this real jerk and his mate are in that double, Um, Michael and Warren."
"Oh yeah cool. Warren's a good cunt. Mike's pretty good to."
Carter Lugged his suitcase across the longe and into his new room. Just one more left.
