Eponine's POV
I wake up not remembering what happened. I look around and realize that I'm in my room. How did I get here? The last thing I remember was I was exploring a house with Marius and then all of the sudden I woke up here.
I try to get up, but when I put weight on my right foot, pain shoots up through it. I then remember about the glass. Today the pain is different; it hurts way more.
I look down expecting to see the piece of fabric wrapped around my foot, but instead I see a more professional gauze wrap around my foot. Who could have replaced it?
I eventually get to my feet and start to make my way to the door. I peak around the corner and see my parents arguing about something. I sneak through the room, making my way to the door gradually.
Finally I make it there without being seen or heard from my parents and hobble out.
I start walking through the streets, my leg killing me, but I keep on going. I have to find Marius.
I try to look through the crowd, but I don't see any familiar faces. People are walking here and there, homeless people are begging for money, some children are running from a bakery; their arms full of pastries, but I don't see Marius.
Time seems to be slowing, the world that I saw yesterday as the happiest place is no looking lonely and sad. I try to walk further, but the streets are busy and crowded and full of strangers.
I finally get to a place that's not as busy. I stumble around trying to figure out which direction Marius's house is in.
Suddenly I hear some screaming and I turn around to see people scrambling to get out of the way of an out of control horse and carriage. Fear builds inside me as I stand like a statue in the middle of its path.
'You have to move Eponine or you'll get crushed!' I think to myself, but I just can't seem to move. The carriage is getting closer and closer. I hear someone scream from beside me and suddenly I am pushed over to the side.
I hear the carriage's sounds fade off as it rolls away. I look up to see Marius standing over me. He's breathing heavily and has a look of fear in his eyes.
"Thank you Marius! I have no idea what I would have done if you weren't there." I say to him.
Marius just looks at the ground and doesn't respond.
"Marius?"
Marius takes my hand and helps me up. He helps me walk as he leads me through the streets. He leads me to a familiar allyway. He doesn't say a word until we get to the house. He sits down on the doorstep and I sit next to him.
"What were you thinking 'Ponine?" He yells at me. I studder, not knowing what to answer.
"You shouldn't be walking around the streets with a sprained ankle!"
A sprained ankle? No wonder my leg hurts more.
"And don't make me start on the glass in your foot!" He knows about that?
"How did you get glass in your foot anyways 'Ponine?" I hesitate; not wanting to tell him what happened.
"Yesterday I was rushing to come see you and I stepped on a broken wine bottle. I guess I wasn't looking" I say looking at my feet. I don't want to see the look on his face right now.
"Why didn't you tell me about it?"
"Because," I say, but then pause. I actually don't know why I didn't tell him. I must have had a reason yesterday, but now I can't seem to reccal what it was. It was probably stupid.
"Maybe because I was embarrassed?" I say; unsure about my own words.
"Like you were embarrassed about your parents?" I lift up my head and look him straight in the eye. My mouth hangs slightly open from shock. How does he know my parents?
"Why wouldn't you tell me about your parents? I thought we were friends and could tell each other anything!"
"I don't know!" I scream back. I didn't think Marius was going to react this way. If I did, I would have stayed put in my room. "I guess I thought it would drive you away to know that my parents are thieves! I thought it would make you not want to be my friend!"
"You really think I would be that way?" Marius says. He now looks shocked and partially offended.
"I would never think that way and I can't believe you would assume I would!"
"Well, I just thought you would think I'm just like them because I'm their daughter! Everybody else does!"
Marius pauses for a second and thinks.
"Well, I'm not like everybody else 'Ponine. I don't care about who your parents are or how poor you are. However, I can't stand a person who keeps secrets from me." Marius looks at me for one second and then looks away; clearly frustrated. Marius stands up to leave and starts walking away.
I don't try to stop him.
