I began packing up my homework when I heard two thumps in front of my bedroom door. They sounded heavy and metallic. I straightened up, holding my leather bound text book close to my chest. Silence followed and fear gnawed at my insides. As soon as I saw the doorknob of my door jiggle the slightest bit, I ran to where the door would hide me when the door was opened up. My breath caught in my chest, my heart thumped so loudly I feared that they would hear it and find me before I could do anything. Ever so slowly, the door was pushed open and a black shadow walked into my bedroom.
Without thinking, I swung my book into the air, hitting the figure on top of their head. I didn't stop there, though. Once they were aware that I was standing behind them, I grabbed their shoulder and sent a shock throughout their body. The light that emanated from my lightning shone onto the trespassers face and I instantly pulled my hand away from Luca's shoulder. He fell to his knees in pain and I didn't hesitate to throw my body on him and wrap my arms around his neck.
"Luca! Where have you been? I was so worried! I thought you were dead. Please, please, please don't ever just run off like that ever again. I missed you so much. Oh my gosh, where were you? Are you okay? Did you run into any trouble? Luca? Why aren't you answering me?" I let go of his neck so that I could grab his face, forcing him to look at me. He inhaled deeply and coughed away from my face.
"Thanks for trying to suffocate me, Nessa. I really appreciate it." He sent me a shy smile and I blushed.
"Sorry," I mumbled.
"Nah, you have every right to be worried. I shouldn't have acted like a three year old. And, I probably shouldn't have put your guards under a sleeping charm. But, if I hadn't I wouldn't have been able to come and talk to you." Luca's profile was highlighted by the soft glow of the full moon and I felt a tension that I didn't know was there leave my body. Luca was back.
"I can't believe you just took off like that." I pulled Luca into one last hug and his arms wrapped around my waist.
"Sorry I'm not sorry for interrupting your little reunion but I would much rather enjoy being home counting my treasure. If you don't mind, I would like to get on with this little favor of yours, Marda." I turned my head and gasped the slightest bit.
"Oh, right. Vanessa, meet Fylpeth. Fylpeth is a... well, Fylpeth is many things that I cannot say but he keeps secrets for big rewards. Like most goblins, he rather enjoys his treasures." Luca blushed a deep red before we separated.
Fylpeth, a very strange name, was a rather short goblin. Standing at only two and a half feet tall, I couldn't help but gag at the faint smell that came from him. His sickly greasy-green reptile skin reminded me of a gator who just came from an algae filled pong. He wore a small, red leather vest and his bottoms appeared to be made from some brown material. Most likely the hide of an animal. His eyes were two separate colors: copper brown and mucus green. Slime dripped from the two cannibalistic pointed teeth that peeked out from under his top lip and dripped onto his chin.
Lovely.
I tried my best to send him a polite smile but I couldn't manage a rather large one. "Your necklace must have cost thousands. Lumious magtitus... it costs an incredible amount of money. It was carved by a ghoul, too. Nearly three quarters of a pound." Fylpeth eyed my necklace greedily from where he stood.
"Oh. Thank you for letting me know? Luca? Why did you bring him here?" I looked over to Luca, who was now over by my bookshelf. He carefully slid a book our from the rows and flipped through the hundreds upon hundreds of crisp pages.
"Fylpeth recalls making a deal with someone. He doesn't remember who it was, but he does recall how big of an offer the made so that he would keep quiet." Luca leaned against a pillar and my eyes turned back to Fylpeth.
