I sat on the bed and look around the room as Alice picked out her clothes for school. So much had changed. The walls that were once covered in her at work now displayed band posters. The bed was now free of stuffed animals, well almost. I gave a small smile when I saw her favorite stuff penguin hidden under her pillow.
She pulled a sweater from her closet and held it up. "That's cute." I said though I knew she couldn't hear me. She hadn't been able to hear me for a few months now. Even though I knew deep down this would happen I couldn't prepare myself for the heart break it would bring. I was losing my best friend.
I signed and laid down flat on the bed. There was no helping it. She could no longer hear me or see me. It would only be a matter of time before she completely forgot about me and I would be gone. Would I become someone else's best friend? Have new adventures with someone else or would I simply fade away into nothing? Tossed aside like all the other things my Alice had outgrown.
