The sole of her left boot drug across the ground, her bare right heel meeting with the hot pavement. They both trudged through the morning sun and thick air. The recent night was absolute hell having someone to watch out for.
The frustration really dawned on her as soon as she messed up her ankle. Her and Finn, they were running side by side. As normal she began to pull ahead...
"Go!" She pleaded for the boy to run faster. At the end of the stretch she knew that they had 12 seconds before the end closed. A creeper was right on their heels.
Just like before she reached for an arrow, but no. All she had was the dammed bow.
Pushing Finn before her she squeezed through the closing door. The monster reached through though, its claw clasping at her ankle. She couldn't help but let out a blood curdling scream, the force in which the beast clamped down with was unbelievable.
Finn luckily had acted as the Creeper was crushed within the wall. He found a boulder and broke off the Creepers arm and pulled her to freedom. Finn posed as her other leg and crutched her further and further into the dark Maze.
Luckily they had found safety for the night. It was an old hidden crack in the Maze covered by vines. The long plants covered her scent long ago, and feeding him the sap within the vines she was able to get Finn through the night.
Now here they were, exhaustion flooding through both of their bodies as they stumbled through the Maze. Their destination was the Glade and inside she knew that they were close.
Through the silence of their short journey, something kept crossing her mind throughout the night. She couldn't help but think back to Newt, everything about him. It drove her absolutely insane. Annoying herself half to death, she came to terms that she wasn't going to get the dammed kid off her mind.
"We're almost there." She called back to Finn pulling her mind away from the British bastered. Continuing forwards normally she got a 'humph' of an 'okay' from the boy. This time however, he was silent. "Finn?"
Turning behind her she immediately stepped forward seeing him slumped against the closest wall. "Hey, hey, hey..." She cooed limping to his side.
Finn's breath was heavy, eyes drifting far away. "Come on, just a little bit further." She gripped his arm and wrapped it over her shoulders.Leading him groggily through the final turns of the Maze, she felt the relief wash over her as she saw the familiar green. There were figures there like before, some sitting, some standing. It was the boys, they were waiting. "Hey!" She screamed.
The first head to shoot up in their direction was none other than Minho's. He had no hesitation, within seconds he was sprinting towards her and his friend. Finn was a runner, and Minho was close to all of his runners.
As he approached, some of the other runners behind him helped him take Finn. The other Gladers remained in the back, they weren't runners, they won't go in the Maze.
As Finn was led away, she ran her hand along the wall and limped forwards behind them. Quietly though, she stopped watching as the boy was reunited with his friends once again. They were all focused on Finn, his tired exhausted body.
Dropping her gaze to her foot, she stared at it's bare taped form. It hurt like hell, but feeling a painful pulse she knew that it wasn't broken.
Suddenly she was pulled from her thoughts, "Oh my god."
Looking from the ground she was caught off guard being blinded by a stern chest. Immediately arms were wrapped around her and she was pulled into a tight embrace. Her entire skin crawled, the edges of the markings tingling as the human contact increased. At first she was going to pull back, push whoever it was away. But then the smell hit her.
