Just A Normal Day At Domino High

Today was a day just like any other. It started with the piercing sound of an alarm clock followed by the only quick part of the day - when getting out of the bed takes an hour rather than the few minutes one thought it was. Then there was the sudden panic of being late, racing to the bathroom to wash before hurrying back to the bedroom to gather not only school clothes but also ones school bag. And that was exactly what happened today...and yesterday...last week also. In all honesty, it was hard to think of a time it didn't happen.

"Go, go, go, go..." Came the whispered ushering of Evangeline as she snuck downstairs, hitching her satchel onto her shoulder before pinning the blue butterfly hair piece into her long, blonde locks.

It had become routine to rush around the house as quietly as she could, trying to not wake up her mother who had undoubtedly drunk herself to sleep last night. But that didn't make it any easier, fearing the consequences should she slip up. Plucking a green apple from the fruit bowl, not that she had much choice of anything else given how empty it was, Eva was soon out the door and on the way to school.

"Eva! What took so long?" Came a cheery voice belonging to your friend Tristan who lived only a few blocks away.

Evangeline quickly brought her slim finger to her lips, shushing harshly while looking to him with her azure eyes. Tristan rubbed the back of his head, chuckling a little.

"Sorry. It's just you're later than usual today. Trouble?" He asked concerned, walking alongside you with his hands behind his head though looked sideways to you as he did.

"Not trouble so much...first of all, I completely forgot we had that exam today! Next, my books were confiscated by my mother. Apparently, she thinks the schools brainwashing me. I managed to get a couple of hours study in last night but by the time I got some done, it was past midnight!" Taking a small bite from her Apple, she chewed the sweet treat for a moment before speaking again. "I...I don't think I'm gonna pass."

"Well certainly not with that attitude you're not! Come on, you just have to believe in yourself. There's still half the day to get some more revising done."

Evangeline turned the last corner, the sight of Domino High on the horizon as well as flocks of pink and blue leading through its gates. Sighing heavily, she fixed her satchel as the two approached Joey who looked equally as unprepared for today as she did.

"Yeah I guess...what about you, Joey? Are you ready?"

"Ready!? Are you kiddin'? I got this exam in the ba-aah!!" He screamed suddenly, Evangeline and Tristan giving their own cries of panic as the screech of brakes were heard.

Evangeline had been clutching at her uniform, eyes closed and crouched slightly. Slowly, she opened her eyes to see the white limo that had almost hit them thankfully stopped just a mere foot away. Exhaling in relief, she looked to the driver that now stepped out, his sunglasses shielded the emotion in his eyes but his words making how he felt all too clear.

"Why don't you watch where you're going, you runts!" Growled the bodyguard.

"I-I'm sorry, we...we didn't mean to-"

"Don't apologise for nuttin', Eva. Ain't our fault Kaiba ain't able to walk on his own two feet. I know you're in there!" Joey shouted, balling his fist at the limo to which the bodyguard only grew more agitated. "Whatsa matter!? Afraid t'show yourself?"

Another door could be heard opening and so Evangeline looked past Tristan to see a tall figure step out dressed in the blue school uniform. His chocolate brown hair was perfectly in place but overshadowed his piercing blue eyes ever so slightly, a sharp gaze that was now directed at the three of them. He looked to each of them individually but landed on Evangeline last, the young blonde seemingly frozen there like a deer in headlights.

"Hmph. I'm surprised the school even let you on the premises, Wheeler." He spoke, tearing his eyes from Eva eventually to smirk over to Joey. "With grades so poor, you're only embarrassing their reputation. Goes to show you can't teach an old -dog- new tricks."

"Don't push me, Kaiba!"Joey growled, taking a step forward with venom in his eyes which only seemed to make him grin more.

Evangeline never did like conflict...most likely because it reminded her of her troubles at home dealing with her mothers tantrums. And so she stepped forward, looking up to Kaiba even though Tristan reached to stop her.

"Mr Kaiba sir? Please, it was an accident. I promise, we'll keep a sharper look out." She spoke up, her timid nature evident by how she backed off a bit when his cold gaze fell to her.

There was silence for a moment before he closed his eyes and turned to walk into the school, his hands in his pockets.

"Whatever. Just keep a leash on the duelling monkey - his mouth only gets him into trouble."

"Y-Yes sir." She replied, turning back to Joey though none of them noticed Kaiba pause in his walking into the school gates.

The way those words had purred in his ears, the way they rubbed his ego was best described as tantalising and moreish. Half looking over his shoulder, he eyed Evangeline for a while longer...this wasn't the first time she had caught his attention, though those times were more out of idle curiosity. But it was a curiosity that was growing the more he watched her, each time taking in a new detail. And right now, he could see how promising she was as well as how curvaceous she was. A hidden gem so to speak that hadn't been discovered yet. Continuing his walk, his smirk grew as his mind had finally been made up.

Evangeline didn't know it yet but today was most certainly not a day like any other. In fact it had only just begun.
