Chapter Four... Rebel Yell

So imagine getting arrested for speeding on your seventeenth birthday. And then imagine when your parents come to bail you out, using the excuse that you were running late for school.

Yep. Could be embarassing.

Except in my circle of friends it was a thrill. I'd been speeding since the day my parents let me first drive a car. Normally I'd be able to avoid the cops, but I didn't care anyway.

Until I got home, and my mom and dad sat me down in the living room looking pretty angry.

"Speeding?" mom began. "Speeding?"

The girl can read minds and she still manages to get herself in trouble with the law. What's her problem?!

"I don't have any problems!" I snapped.

"At least I know you can still actually read minds," mom hissed.

"Not by choice," I frowned, rolling my eyes.

"That human side of you is so bloody prominent right now!" mom yelled. "Isabelle, you need to be careful. You could have exposed us because of your thrill-seeking. Do you have any idea what that could do to our kind? To us?!"

Just once I'd like Izzie to actually take responsibility for something. What happened to the innocent child she used to be?

"I grew up and saw how big of a freak I was!" I shouted.

"Izzie, listen to your mother please," dad sighed.

My little girl... what happened to the sweet child she used to be? Now she only causes trouble, and I don't like it.

"You don't have to like it," I rolled my eyes. "I'm my own person. What the hell is wrong with that?! I like being my own person!"

"You're smoking, drinking and attracting unwanted attention!" mom shouted. "You're making the entire family look bad!"

"I'm so freaking sorry that I'm the black sheep of the family!" I screamed, getting up and storming out the door.

I used my vampire speed to get myself as far away from the freak show as I possibly could. I ended up at school, and it was lunch time. The morning had passed quickly, and I found my group of friends easily.

"Iz!" Dewey ran up and took me into his arms. "Happy birthday, trouble."

"Yeah, I just came from the cop shop," I laughed.

"What did you do?" Jenaya asked, frowning.

"Oh, you know," I chuckled. "Just a little bit of speeding. Of course, my parents had to bail me out and now they're pissed off."

"So you came to school?" she questioned.

"Oh, I'm not going to class, hell no!" I said, smiling. "I'm going to play in the forest for a while. Of course, you're welcome to skip school and join me."

"I'm in," Lizzie perked up. "I have homework due that I didn't do, so count me in."

"You never do homework, Liz," Jenaya rolled her eyes.

"Because it's bullshit, and I hate it," she snapped.

"Doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, skank!" Jenaya hissed. "You think Iz is gonna fail school, but at least her homework's always done."

"Parental force," I sighed.

"Izzie's totally got brains, Nay!" Lizzie groaned. "I'm dumb. I don't know anything."

"My whole family is smart, not me," I stated.

"You have brains, Iz," Lizzie pointed out.

"Yes, but I'm my family's embarassment," I sighed. "Having brains doesn't mean anything if your aunt catches you smoking and tells your parents."

"So? You're a rebel," Jenaya stated.

"Exactly," I frowned. "And they treat me like I'm an idiot. I am not!"

I'd love to tap that ass... Dewey's thoughts filled my head suddenly, and I frowned even more. Yep. Lizzie's a hot piece of ass... Okay, so he wasn't checking out my ass.

"Why don't you just ask her out already?" I questioned, turning to Dewey. Jenaya and Lizzie both looked at me, stunned.

"What?" Dewey asked.

"I saw you checking out Lizzie's ass, dude," I gave him a playful shove. He looked shocked and relieved at the same time.

He'd only want sex from me. Lizzie's head was filled with crap usually, but suddenly it was clear, understandable. Still, could I say no to him?

"Do you wanna...?" Dewey began.

"It's a date," Lizzie grinned. Hope he realises I'm not that easy...

After the bell went indicating the end of lunch, I decided to head back home and face the music. Lizzie and Dewey walked together, and I watched Jenaya find Adam and cuddle up to him. Then suddenly I felt so alone.

I had a reputation that wasn't even true. Sometimes it would be nice to not be alone, and to have someone.

Even with my friends, I still felt lonely. And I couldn't help but blame my teen rebellion on that. It was possible. Loneliness. The leading cause of teenage rebels? I guess anything was possible.

Wait, who was I to question possibilities? I was part vampire, part wolf and part human! Most of my family fell into the vampire category, with a couple landing on the wolf cards, and even less in the human side. But I was a freak in my own mind, just a simple loser who nobody liked. Even my friends were happy. They had boyfriends. They had at least tried sex.

But I was the one who was often called the town bicycle, and I was a virgin?

How the hell does that make any sense?!

Once I arrived back home, I dully laid down on my bed. My family were still all here, but I wanted some alone time. Tears welled in my eyes, and I knew that I was in over my head.

But a light tap at the door startled me. My mom entered without waiting for my reply, smiling weakly.

"Look, I'm sorry we yelled at you, Izzie," she began. "But you have to understand that if you're gonna speed, you have to be careful."

"Mom, I know," I sniffled. "I get it. And I'm sorry, too."

"Wow," she sighed. "You're not normally big on apologies."

"No, but I know when I'm wrong," I said, smiling weakly. "Truth is I wasn't paying attention for if there might be any cops around. Usually I know, and I slow down. But today I didn't seem to care, and I'm not normally that careless with our identities."

"I guess that's a bonus," she frowned.

"Well, I'm a freak already," I sighed. "People think I sleep around, and I don't. People think I'm more trouble than I actually am. And here? Well, even though I feel like a freak around here, home is really the only place I can be myself."

"Well, good," mom smiled. "You might just be growing up then."

"No, tomorrow I'll probably cause more trouble because I seem to be a troublesome teenager," I chuckled. "But uh... thanks?"

"For?"

"For being here for me, no matter what."

"Well, Isabelle, that's what mothers do. And I know that you want to be normal, but that's just it. We aren't normal. We are all vampires, and that's the reality. That's who we are."

"One day I might actually come to accept that."

"You will. You don't have a choice."

Mom stood up and left the room at that moment. I felt relieved for some reason, because I had come to a realisation.

But of course, I knew it wouldn't last long. I was a rebel through-and-through, and nobody could save me from my downward spiral.

Or could they?
