chapter six
When night fell I got ready to go out to my field, excitement rising within me and taking control of any other emotion. I was excited at the aspect of me not being alone in the field. Any other person would have been angered at having their little piece of heaven disrupted but I had been alone so long, and having someone who kept to themselves actually made me feel as though I wasn't ignored as much as I thought I would. If it were anyone other than Blue Majors I would have been angry, horrified at the thought of someone using the field.
And that was why I had grabbed another blanket and walked out into the night air, having waited until it was completely dark. I walked out, my eyes flickering up towards the sky and I stood there for five minutes. I allowed my eyes to adjust with the air around me, and with each minute that passed my eyes were greeted with more stars and my heart jumped in my chest at the thought of these beautiful stars above me. I envied astronauts and their ability to be out in that space and see the stars closer than one would on earth. I wanted to float in the air with my fingers reached out and be one with the galaxy but I knew it was impossible.
I sighed and headed down the back porch steps and began to trek across the little yard I had and into the tall grass. My eyes flickered to either side of my house yard, and found that the neighbors were stuck in their houses, clustered and interested in the idea of star gazing. They knew of my adventure that flowed through my blood. None of them came out and asked me what I was doing, not even when I started doing this. Instead they watched from their windows, as though making sure that I wouldn't off myself in the end.
Heading further into the field, my eyes fell on the same figure as the night before. Blue sat in these same spot as he did the night before, his eyes up and captured on the galaxy before us. I couldn't help but give a half smile and place my blanket a few inches closer to him. I knew that until we would be in the company of each other for a while I wouldn't ever dismantle the distance between us and have him sit on the blanket with me.
And so I just sat my blanket down and sat down on it before watching Blue for a moment. He was peering up at the stars, with this look that held marvel. I couldn't help but smile a sweet smile at him and when he turned his head I looked up at the stars, my eyes catching on a shooting star that was flickering across the sky. I knew that if I caught his eyes and he found that I had sat closer to him that he would probably get up and walk away, but the distance was not even noticeable and so when he looked back up at the sky I fought the urge to let out a breath of relief.
Instead I leaned back into my blanket and spread my legs out, letting my feet touch the dry grass. My fingers spread themselves out and tapped against the plaid blanket that I had. And the wind rippled around me, the wind touching my pastel pink air.
And strangely, Blue stayed fifteen minutes later than last night. I knew that he would probably stay a little longer, maybe he wondered if I would try and talk. I wasn't going to dare talk to him, without knowing that he wouldn't get up and leave. I knew that if he got up and leave he probably would find another field to stay at. And I didn't want that, I wanted to feel as though I could be worthy enough to have company.
And that was why I didn't speak, at least not for now. I cared too much of the fact that another body lay within the dry grass that I found myself shocked by it. Things had changed, I had craved the idea of having company.
