Chapter 4
My head was pouring with sweat, as we started the second set. I was leading 6-4, but I could feel my energy starting to drain out. "Come on girl! You have to do this! Only one more set!"I told myself, trying to boost my energy.
Today was our big home tennis game, the one I had invited Mr.Wood to attend. I had completely ignored him today morning in class, and saw the bewildered look on his face, but didn't say anything. I was positive that he wasn't going to come to watch today.
My opponent placed the ball but I knew what she was going to do; with all my strength I smacked the ball with a powerful forehand and won the point. "Yes!"I shouted. I was dead tired but I knew I couldn't give up now. I was two points away from winning the game.
I quickly grabbed my towel and wiped the sweat off my face. Within those two minutes, I realized how much I wanted to win this game. I needed to prove to my team that I was a worthy captain. I needed to show people that tennis was my life.
I stepped onto the court, surprisingly calm. I was ready. My opponent served the ball with power and speed, but I was prepared. "Thwack!!" I hit the ball down the line and won the point. I was finally one point away from winning the match.
I crouched down in my ready position, my eye was on the target. The cool breeze didn't deter my focus. It was a long battle, my knees were pleading me to stop but I didn't. My opponent gave the ball a curve but I managed to do a sharp backhand so fast that she wasn't able to reach the ball in time. I had won. I fell down on the ground, exhausted but aware of the crowd cheering me on. I had proved myself.
"Nice job!"My coach yelled at me, slapping me on the back. I smiled, though still exhausted.
I went out of the courts to fill my water bottle. As I was filling my bottle, a familiar cologne smell drifted over me. I turned around and there he was.
"Uhh... hi"I managed to say.
"Hey Krista, nice job today! You played great."he said, a warm smile on his face.
"Thanks Mr. Wood."I said.
"I saw the strong determination in your eyes today. The game was always yours to win."He said seriously, looking at me straight in the eye. My heart skipped a beat. It was like he saw right through me.
"Thanks. Hope you had fun watching the game." I said, curtly.
I walked away hurriedly, though i knew I was being such a jerk to him. I felt sad all of a sudden. All he did was try to be nice to me, yet I acted like such a jerk to him.
I walked back to him and took a deep breath. "Mr.Wood, I'm sorry I was being kind of stubborn this morning with helping you in tennis. I didn't know what got into me." He looked at me seriously again, his face full of understanding.
"It's ok. We all have our bad days. See you tomorrow in class."he said, smiling as he walked away.
Just as I thought. I was falling for him again. But this time, I didn't care.
Sorry for such a short chapter but I didn't have much time today. Better chapter tomorrow! xxRoseAuburn
