Chapter 16

My stomach flip flopped as I walked to gym class. Was Mr. Wood going to say anything about the rose he gave me? Or about meeting during lunch? My mind was buzzing.

Today we had a presenter for gym class from a health food company, so we didn't have to change our clothes. I walked in to see bleachers set up for the talk. Clara waived her hand at me near the front row as I rushed to her.

I scanned the audience to see if he was sitting in the bleachers, and found him standing with the other gym teachers near the side of the gym. I tried to make eye contact but he avoided my gaze.

What does he want from me?

"Earth to Krista!" Clara said, nudging me. She followed my gaze that pointed directly to Mr. Wood and made  a little excitement noise. "No way, I knew you liked him!" She yelled, clapping her hands.

"N-Nooo!" I stammered, looking away quickly. Clara rolled her eyes. "Girl, I've known all along. You stare at him in literally every class." She said, laughing. I freeze, was I that obvious?

I sighed, deciding it was time to tell my best friend the truth. "Clara, I need to tell you something..."

Clara's eyes widened as I told her  everything from the day I took a walk with him all the way to where we were now.

"I can't believe you didn't tell me any of this!" Clara yelped, shaking her head.

"I'm sorry girl, I didn't want to tell you because I didn't even accept that it was happening. It's so weird and so unexpected but it feels sooo good." I explained, putting my head in my hands.

Clara gave me a hug, which I definitely needed, and excitedly asked me more questions about him and I, wanting every detail about what happened at my place. "Girl, you got the hottest guy at our school. I'm so excited for you!!!" She said smiling.

I loved her, we were best friends since elementary school and she was always there supporting me no matter what. "Omg I wonder what's he's planning today at the Willow Tree?" She said loudly, squinting at him.

"Shush, keep your voice down. Nobody can find out about this." I said, quietly, looking around to make sure nobody was paying attention. I loved Clara, but she did not know how to whisper. She nodded her head acknowledging her mistake.

"Omg he's looking at you" Clara whispered. I turned to look at him and she was right. But he wasn't smiling, he looked frustrated.

What was wrong with him?

I didn't question it too much, I assumed he was probably just having a bad day.

The rest of the hour was spent watching the presentation and soon enough the bell rang.

Students rushed out of bleachers and we headed to our next classes. I looked back to see if Mr. Wood was there but he vanished. He was acting weird.

Lunch time came around and my palms were sweaty, I was so nervous. I held a peach rose in my hand planning to give it to him when we met.

Seniors were able to go anywhere off campus for lunch so nobody questioned me when I walked out the door.

I slowly walked to the tennis courts, looping around the back to go to the willow tree. People at my school would call it the "lover's tree" because student would make out, have picnics, there was even a proposal over there once. It was pretty romantic.

I sat under the tree, waiting for him to come. I was a couple of minutes early.

I closed my eyes, taking in the gorgeous day as the breeze hit my face gently. Today was literally the perfect day, and he was going to make it even better.

I heard a "snap" as footsteps walked towards me.

I smiled as two warm hands were placed on my eyes.

Suddenly my body tensed up. The scent was unfamiliar. It smelled like cigarettes and alcohol.

"Don't move" someone growled in my ear.
