Chapter 5: Like My Mom

I avoided Hillary until school ended and began to walk straight to Ryan's house. I think she knew I was avoiding her because every time she'd see me in the halls, she would hide her face, not knowing that I had already seen her. 'That's why I love her so much', and I smiled to myself, but only for a moment. She always knew the right moments to leave me alone and to let me think.

Ryan's house was too far away from Starbucks, and I was too lazy, so I couldn't make my usual trip. "Now that's another highlight to my day", I said to myself sarcastically while rolling my eyes. I was already grumpy because of what had happened between us in school and now there was no coffee for me! Great! This day really was the worst.

My head was swimming with so many negative thoughts when I got to the house, that I didn't even notice Hannah standing by the door as I approached. She was pinching the bridge of her nose impatiently and rubbing her hands on her dress. "Oh, hey Hannah. What's up?" I asked, popping the P to hide my horrible mood.

She smiled warmly when she saw me and grabbed my arm, "I remember telling you that I was going to take you shopping today", she said happily. "I finally have a girl in the house and I'm going to use that to my advantage". I smiled awkwardly and walked inside the house to put my bag down so I could follow her to whatever store she was taking me to.

I sat down in her car and she began to play music. Immediately, 'Love Yourself' by Justin Bieber began to play and I couldn't help mouthing the words to the song. I stared out the window as the song ended and noticed that we weren't anywhere near the local clothing stores. My face contorted and I was about to say something like, 'Um, do you know where you're going?', when I heard her start to laugh. "If you ever want to get a boyfriend, don't ever make your face like that. I can see your face through the mirror and it was priceless". I relaxed my face and started, "No, I was just confused because-".

"Yeah, I know that I passed by the regular stores", she told me, cutting me off, "But I'm not taking you to those cheap stores. You are my fashion emergency of the week, so you deserve a little more than what those small stores could give to you. I'm taking you to Scholorsdale County. Land of the highest brand clothing!" I smirked and continued to nod my head to the song that was playing; 'Soap by Melanie Martinez'.

"Mrs. Selow, I don't need high brand things to make me look beautiful", I stated plainly and she just laughed. "First of all Kelly, if you were any other girl, I would believe you. But, seriously Hun, look yourself up and down. Second of all, you don't have to talk to me formerly. Call me Hannah".

I smiled and then we both were sitting in awkward silence. I wanted to thank her, but I didn't know how, so I resulted in playing with my ponytail. She laughed again after spying on me through her mirror, "Your father told me that you never take that scrunchy out your hair and that you lost your sense of style". She continued to laugh and I smirked and answered, "My dad said that? Because if he did, that is super hypocritical of him. I mean, he only has two colors in his closet. Brown and black!" Hannah roared with laughter and I couldn't help following along.

"Look sweetie", she said, still wiping at her eyes, "I don't want you to think that I'm your replacement mom. I just wanted you to have one. So don't hesitate asking me for anything, ok?" I nodded and smiled. "Well, I'm going to shop for you and I'm going to make you look like a girl again." She stated that with finality and I turned away from the window and stared at her with an amused look plastered on my face, like wallpaper. "What, so I don't look like a girl now?" I asked sarcastically. She laughed and I too along with her.

She parked in one of the slots in the huge parking lot that belonged to the county store. She lead me inside I couldn't keep my eyes open. I had never been in a store that grand before. I mean, there were so many clothes from the ceiling and down. I watched as people climbed up or down the stairs to reach a dress that they had spotted from the ground. I began walking around and touching the silk of a really pretty turquoise dress, but stopped when something inside me urged me to look at the price. I almost dropped because of shock! The price of the dress, alone, was 300 dollars!! Three hundred dollars for one dress!!

'In the dress' defense, it is really pretty', I thought to myself. But literally, 300 dollars could buy me a whole new wardrobe if I went to one of the local stores. I looked back at Hannah's face because I knew she had seen the price too, but she was smiling. She was smiling!

"Give it to me. I'm buying it", she declared, with her hand stretched out. I gave her an incredulous look. "I am not letting you pay for this. Really, there are many beautifully cheap dresses at the local stores. Let's go there!" But she just shook her head and grabbed the hanger before I could register what she was doing. She reached into her bag and pulled out a blue credit card. "You see this, Kelly?" She asked me, while waving it in my face. I didn't dare answer. "With this, I can buy you anything I want to buy you. Now, I want you to shop until you drop and I don't see you dropping so start shopping!"

I hugged her and she smiled a nice motherly smile. We both practically ran through the isles picking off any type of jeans, shirt, dress, cardigan, shoe, sweater; basically, anything that caught our attention and anything that we could fit into. At first, I thought Hannah was picking things for herself until she threw everything that she had picked out on the counter and they were all my size. I was about to say something but she just shushed me by saying, "I've got enough clothes already".

By the end of our shopping spree, Hannah had spent nearly $100,000 on me. The woman behind the counter was smiling so hard at Hannah and I knew that she was waiting for a generous tip. Well, Hannah did not disappoint her and I at all. This has been the best day I've ever had in a long time, even though it started out pretty crappy.

We packed all of the clothes into the van and bought some Churros. We were laughing, joking, and talking the whole way back and it finally felt as if I had a mom again, or at least the closest to a mom that I've had in a while. It's been a really long time.

'I can't wait until tomorrow', I thought excitedly. Seriously, I felt as if stares will follow me into the school tomorrow. But, I'll still keep my ponytail.
