Chapter 11 [Daniel's POV]
*1 hour before the phone call*
I had just exited the dining hall from breakfast somewhat ticked off. Isn't it a little too early for people to be so annoying and to top it off Adora wasn't at breakfast either so I had to sit by myself. Don't get me wrong I have other friends, I happen to be a very likeable guy but I enjoy sitting with her. As if that wasn't enough Tweedledee and Tweedledum were bugging me about Adam and how they couldn't find him and if I did something they were going to make me pay. I don't care about that douche bag enough to hurt him, if he's gone good riddance I didn't like him anyway. Especially since he's the reason Adora didn't talk to me all yesterday afternoon. I mean I obviously could have went to her room yesterday but I wanted to give her space and she obviously took advantage of that. Maybe I'll see her before lunch, if she even wants to talk to me. I decided to chill in the library since we usually hang out there before lunch. Ugh I probably look like a freaking lost puppy, Adora owes me big time. You can't just let a guy like me fall into a routine with you and not show up, do you know how weird that is? This morning I waited for her in front of the movie room so we can walk into the dining hall together for breakfast. But, since I got stood up I had to sit by myself and act like it didn't faze me. I had to deal with her so called friends without strangling them because that's considered a crime and now I'm bored and all alone in this cobweb infested library. Great stuff.
My brooding was interrupted by the telephone ringing, I looked towards the front desk and saw Mrs. Carson wasn't there. Should I answer it and take a message or will the old lady be pissed I touched her stuff? After the third ring the person on the line didn't hang up so I decided just to answer it."Hello, this is the library Mrs. Carson isn't in right now can I take a message?"
That sounded so professional, maybe I should be a secretary.
"Hey my name is Adora I'm being held hostage in room BL023 please send help he's coming back." The person on the line said.
Adora??? My Adora or another Adora, is there even another Adora at the orphanage? Wait Daniel can you stay focused, someone just said they're being held hostage and this is what you think about.
"Who's he?"
"Ad..." Was all I heard before the line went dead.
Oh shit, what am I supposed to do? The only person who can call '911' is Eric and there's no telling where he is right now. That line didn't go dead by itself so regardless of what I decide I need to hurry. I raced out of the library and sprinted down the hall to my room. If I'm going in alone I'm not going empty handed, I grabbed my aluminum bat and my camouflage backpack just in case. Before leaving I wrote out a note and stuck it to my door it said:
'There is a hostage situation in BL023 if you see this find Eric and have him call 911.
~ Daniel'
Hopefully whoever sees this does as it says instead of just walking by or I might be screwed myself. I went outside and walked along the building until I saw the cellar door for the basement. It was a metal double door with rust on the corners, I opened it to reveal a long and dark stairwell. I started the trek downward with the only thing breaking the silence being the sound of my footsteps echoing off the narrow walls. At the end of the staircase there was another door it was white with chipping paint around the edges. I opened the door and saw three hallways stretching in different directions. Now which one of you will lead me to room 023? I looked down the dimly lit halls and decided to go left and if the room numbers didn't add up I'll go back to the starting point and choose a different hall. The first door I saw was on the right side and had '016' on the door, then a little ways down was a door on the left with '017'. I'm going the right way on that note I jogged down the hall until I was in front of a door with '023' on it. Okay this is now or never I gripped my bat with one hand and with the other I held the door handle.
1...2...3...The door handle jiggled but didn't open, the door was locked. Fuck! Whatever element of surprised I thought I would have is out the window. I reached into my bag and grabbed my tools so I could pick the lock, I fiddled with it until I heard a satisfying click. Okay Danny boy you got to go in swinging, I pushed open the door and continuously swung my bat in front of me. I looked about and saw the only thing in front of me was a bloody red head in a heap on the floor. I crouched down in front of her body and moved her hair from in her face.
"Adora, what did that bastard do to you? I'm going to get you out of here."
She slowly opened her eyes and whispered "Behind you."
I whipped around just in time to see Adam lunging at me with a knife in his hands. I dodged him but he didn't even miss a step and continued to stab and slice with his knife. His movements were fast and precise to point were I was just barely missing his blade. Every time I would try to swing my bat he would aim his knife at my arm so I couldn't complete the action. I was a sheep getting charged at by a wolf, my only defense try to avoid the inevitable.
I tripped on the heel of my shoe and that's when he got me, he made a clean cut from my right shoulder to my left hip. It burned as my blood pooled to the surface and dotted my clothes. I groaned when my hands instinctively touched the wound, I can't let that happen again.
"Oh, did that hurt why don't you stay still so I can finish you." Adam said with a crazed smile on his face.
He lunged at me again but this time I was ready and swung my bat into his side. He stumbled sideways holding his side and laughing. I couldn't tell if it was a 'ha that didn't hurt' laugh or a 'I'm crazy so I laugh at pain' laugh but I wasn't waiting to find out. I swung the bat again this time getting him in the leg, it buckled underneath him and from his kneeled position he stopped laughing and looked up at me glaring. He reached behind him and pulled out a small hand gun and aimed it at me.
"I was having fun but you just had to get serious. Now I'm done playing games, any last words?"
Adam said while cocking his gun, ready to fire as soon as I finished speaking.I smiled and said "Yeah, nighty night."
His eyes widened then closed as his body fell to the ground. Adora stood above him breathing hard with a huge pipe in her hands. She released the pipe and began to fall forward, but I caught her before she could hit the ground. I picked her up bridal style, grabbed my stuff and headed for the door. When I made it to the foot of the stairs I could hear the sound sirens flowing through the cellar doors, of course they would come after everything is said and done with. I felt Adora stir in my arms and smiled, I couldn't help but think all this trouble was worth it.
