"It's something unpredictable,
But in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life."
The next two weeks after my birthday was quite uneventful. Since finals was a week after my birthday, I immediately began to study and practice my music.
I was proud to say that all my papers were a breeze, and I was confident enough to say that I probably did well.
Of course I did. When have I ever done anything less than my very best? I thought.
Like I predicted, I did well for my finals. Scoring distinctions for every subject and a distinction of honour for Music, I was graduating as the 1% of Meilleur. That meant I was immediately entered into privilege classes in Meilleur University, along with the other thirty or so students that were in the 1%.
To my delight, I found out that Bianca and Adia were not going to be in any of my university classes that I had applied for, as they didn't manage to score as well. The only other person I knew of that was in the 1% batch was Yuko Hideyoshi, which was no surprise. It was no secret that he was easily the smartest person in school.
Speaking of the boy, I haven't spoken to him or even seen him for the past two weeks. I convinced myself that the skipping of heart beats was due to the fact that I was surprised to see him sitting in the front row, along with the other three Royals.
The Royals sat on the very first row, along with the Vice Principal, and other important people that invested in our school. Meilleur's 1% was allocated to sit on the second and third row, and instead of the regular dark blue graduation gown, we were clad in a flowy maroon one instead. Adjusting my graduation cap, I sat up straighter when our Principal got up from her seat and approached the podium.
With a smile on her face, she began to speak.
"Good morning, ladies, gentlemen, and most importantly, graduating Meilleureans," she began. "We are gathered here today because you made it!"
Loud cheers and whoops sounded across the elegantly decorated parade square, accompanied with excited chattering. When everyone settled down, Principal Karen spoke again.
"We shall first invite our Valedictorian up on stage to have him speak a few words. Mister Hideyoshi, may you please?" Principal Karen said. I saw the back of his head nod slightly as he rose from his seat. Slowly and gracefully, he glided into stage.
"It is an honour to stand before all of you today," he said softly. Although he was speaking into a microphone, his voice was still soft and gentle, and everyone quietened down to hear what he had to say. "Firstly, I would like to thank our fellow teachers. Without them, we wouldn't be standing here today..."
His words floated around the air, entrancing everyone present. I could only focus on his lips, the way they moved gently and carefully.
"Regardless of whether or not you will continue to be a part of the Meilleurean family, I hope all of you will always look back at your time here with fondness. As cheesy as it sounds...once a Meilleurean, always a Meilleurean."
When he finally finished his speech, there was a pause of silence. It was as if time itself stopped. And then the silent spell broke and everyone applauded loudly and choatically. Even I had a ghost of a smile on my lips as I clapped for him. Yuko knew exactly how to draw people in and capture their attention, and leave them completely breathless from his beautiful words.
Bowing, he left the stage and returned to his seat. From where I was, I could see Logan nudging Yuko with his elbow playfully and Asher clap his back proudly. Robin nodded at his friend, before saying something to Yuko. Whatever he said to Yuko left Yuko grinning with happiness.
