"And I get a kick, you give me a boot.
I get a kick out of you."
"Sho-yum-meh," Logan moaned with his mouth filled to the brim with rice and beef. His eyes twinkled with satisfaction as he continued to devour his entire plate of food. It was to the point where I worried that he was going to try eating the plate and table.
"Calm down, you pig," Yuko muttered, rolling his eyes. Yuko had finished his portion of food long ago and was currently burying his nose into his book.
Mason, who sat next to Logan, eyed the last piece of chicken on the plate hungrily. He hesitated, glancing at Logan, as if afraid he would chomp his arm off if he tried to take the meat.
Logan seemed to notice this, and blinked slowly, as if realising for the first time that he was hogging everyone's food. Shrugging, he expertly grabbed the piece of chicken with his chopsticks and placed it in Mason's bowl.
"Eat up," Logan said, while simultaneously shovelling rice into his mouth, which in turn made his words jumble and slur and generally incomprehensible to the average person. But here, we grew used to his antics and could easily decipher what he wanted to say.
"Thanks," Mason said gratefully with a smile, and began to eat again. Mason was improving slowly, day by day. He was beginning to put on weight, gaining back what he had lost. Although he was still stuck in his wheelchair, I heard from his physiotherapist that he was making good progress. He'll be able to get back onto his feet in a week, she had said.
The only thing we have to worry about is his education. Due to his hospitalisation, he had missed out on his final exams and graduation. I knew that he won't want to repeat senior year, so I was thinking of getting Dad to enrol him into online classes until he's ready to retake his exams. It really felt as if he was getting his life back together.
"Marissa," Logan said, breathing heavily from eating so much. He could've fooled anyone into thinking that he just finished an intensive workout from the way he was sweating and panting.
"Yes, Logan?" I replied, half-expecting him to ask me for another bowl of rice.
"Will you marry me?" he asked with wide-eyes and a hopeful expression. Mason spat out his chicken and I almost choked on my saliva.
"What the fuck?" Yuko exclaimed, frowning at his friend.
"Um...," I trailed off, giving him a weird look.
"No one cooks for me," Logan explained, or whined. "If you marry me, you'll cook for me every day, won't you?"
"You want to marry my sister for her cooking skills?" Mason said slowly, staring at Logan as if he had grown three heads.
"Why don't you just hire a bloody cook?" Yuko asked, throwing his arms up and giving Logan an incredulous look.
"Oh," Logan blinked. "Right. That could work too. But...cooks aren't pretty like Marissa!"
"Shut up, Logan," Yuko almost growled, shooting his friend a warning stare. "Marissa is off-limits."
Logan pouted and sank back into his seat, sighing childishly.
"Killjoy," he muttered under his breath and crossed his arms angrily.
"Stop acting like a child," Yuko chided, rolling his eyes again. "And wipe your face, you have rice on your forehead."
