Prologue

Kakashi's P.O.V

I pushed myself faster and faster, forcing myself to run faster than I ever had before. The girl in my arms was losing blood steadily and I didn't know how long she was going to last. I briefly played over the events that led to my finding her in my head.

Breathing in the night air, I could smell the trees, that earth, the dew. The scent of the forest late in the night. I peered up at the full moon, thinking this to be a perfect night. I was wrong. Shortly after, a loud crash resounded throughout the forest. It was followed by another and another. A series of crashes and booms rang in unison. A tune that was quiet familiar to me and many other shinobi. It was the song of battle. I took off in the direction from which the sound had come. Shortly, the crashing stopped and a few moments later, an agonizing scream echoed against the trees. Pushing myself faster, I burst in to an open clearing. There were trees broken, large indents in the ground, and a trail of blood leading off into the trees. I followed it carefully, until I came to it's end. There, in a puddle of blood, was a beautiful girl with long white hair and luminescent pale skin. Her eyes were closed and it almost seemed as if she were only sleeping. But the blood and wounds spoke otherwise. Acting immediately, I carefully picked her up and turned to the village. And I ran.

The front gate was in sight, as were the couple of ANBU gaurding it, when I peered momentarily down at the girl. She appeared to be no more than 13 years old. Far too young to die this way. Without pausing at the gate to explain, I lept to the rooftops and pushed myself even faster. I knew one of them would follow me to demand an explanation. Moments later the hospital was in sight. Rushing in, I gave the girl over to the medics with the assurance that they would do what they could. Sure enough, as I suspected, one of the ANBU from the gate was there when I turned around. "I take it you're here to get an explanation about why I tore through the gate with a bleeding girl in my arms?" He nodded. I sighed. "Alright then." It took a while to explain everything to the ANBU, as he demanded to know every little detail. When I finished, he seemed to be deep in thought, though I couldn't tell because of the mask covering his face. Just then, a nurse drew my attention and asked, "Do you personally know the girl you brought in?" I shook my head. "No, I found her as she was." The nurse pursed her lips. "There's something you might want to see." Motioning for the ANBU and I to follow, she led us through the halls and into a small room. On the bed lay the girl, all the blood wiped away and looking positively at peace. She was hooked up to an IV and a heart moniter. The nurse motioned for me to move closer. I did so and she spoke again. "Do you see? There, on her right arm." I looked down to the arm in question and there, shining like the full moon outside, was a shinobi forehead protecter tied around her upper arm. Engraved in it was a symbol unfamiliar to me, which came as a surprise to me. I knew the symbol of all the major shinobi villages. Just then, i heard an intake of breath next to me. It was the ANBU. He turned to me. I gave him a questioning look and asked, "What's wrong?" He looked down once more before responding. "That symbol....is that of the Village Hidden in Shadows......"
