We left the sleeping bags and stuff. Erica only grabbed the little supplies we had (taking what she could from the store, but there wasn’t much. Somebody had already raided the place) and began to head back.
“Wait,” Calvin stopped Erica and Apple. Erica shot him a glare but Apple looked up at him without an attitude. “What about Carson and Brooklyn?”
Apple peered behind her to see the two kids still sitting in the corner, watching us. “Shit,” Apple said under her breath. She raised her voice for the next one so she wasn’t whispering anymore. “We can’t leave them.”
“Damn right,” Erica sighed, fixing her blonde pony tail. “But we also don’t have enough supplies to care for them. I’m all for taking them with us, but we can’t keep them. We’ll have to pawn them off on somebody.”
Calvin gapped at Erica. “Are you fucking serious?” Calvin whispered in disbelief.
Erica raised her eyebrows. “What else can we do?”
“We can’t pawn them off on strangers!” Calvin told her, pulling his eyebrows together. “People can be worse than the zombies!”
Apple sighed. “You guys are both right.”
Calvin and Erica looked up at Apple. Apple brushed her red bangs out of her eyes before saying, “We don’t have the supplies to take care of them, as Erica said. But we can’t pawn them off on someone we can’t trust, because, well, something terrible could happen. And that would be our fault.”
Erica bit her lip and Calvin scratched his head.
“Okay,” Erica said, looking like she got an idea. “First, we’ll find out if they even want to come with us. I mean, yeah, it’s great we are willing to take them and care for them, even if it’s for a little while, but that could be a waste if they don’t come at all.”
Calvin nodded. “Has anyone even actually talked to them though?”
Everyone exchanged looks. When it became clear that none of the adults had talked to them, their eyes all landed on me. I blinked a few times and said, “What?”
Apple kneeled down. “Clem, can you go ask Carson and Brooklyn if they want to join our group? We think they might join if you ask compared to us.”
I nodded slowly, and then turned to look at Brooklyn and Carson. They stared back at us. I walked over there, feeling awkward as I felt all the eyes in the room on me. My group was watching me because I was doing something for them, and Carson and Brooklyn was watching me because I was walking toward them. I rubbed my arm as I approached the two.
“Uh,” I say. They are both looking up at me. “Do you guys want to join our group?”
They stared at me, not saying anything. I felt awkward as we just stood there, staring at each other. I cleared my throat and Carson spoke up.
“Yes, we’ll join your group.”
I smiled. “Great! Well, come on, we’re leaving right now. I think we are going to go find your dad,” I said, trying to think back to what Erica and Apple said earlier. I couldn’t think of exactly what they said.
Carson stood up and looked down at Brooklyn. She pursed her lips before she stood as well. I turned and lead the way back to the group, smiling at Apple. “They said they’d like to join our group.”
Apple smiled at the two. “Good! I’m Alexandra, that’s Erica, and that’s Calvin.”
Carson and Brooklyn looked at each of the adults but didn’t say anything.
