We all went to bed after we were done celebrating. We went to sleep in the room with all the food, that way Erica could watch over it.
When we got up the next morning, everyone was in a good mood. Except me. I was happy of course; happy that my group found so much food. But I had decided what I want to do. I want to do what Lee told me to do. And Lee told me to find Christ and Omid (check) and to stay with them. They will take care of me.
“Should we eat breakfast?” Apple asked, sitting up and stretching.
“We can’t eat everything at once,” Erica said. “We should be smart with what we have. We’re sticking to one meal a day.”
Apple made a face. “Oh, come on, Erica. We have all this food… why don’t we have two meals a day, and go out to find more food every week or so?”
Erica thought about it but shook her head. “I don’t want to waste food.”
Apple looked really disappointed. She turned to me. “What do you think, Clem? One or two meals a day?”
I coughed to clear my throat so I wouldn’t start crying. “Um… I don’t know. It’s not really my choice.”
Apple raised her eyebrows. “What do you mean? You’re apart of this group, so you have just as much say as the rest of us.”
I rubbed my neck as I tried to think of what to say. “I… I um… Lee told me to stick with Christa. So I think that’s what I’m going to do.”
Apple’s face fell. It turned pale and sick looking. Her mouth wasn’t hanging open but it wasn’t closed either. I could see her lip quiver as she stared at me. I had to look away because she looked like she was going to break down crying and I couldn’t handle it.
Erica coughed. “Oh. Okay. So when do you think you’ll be taking off, kid?”
“I don’t know,” I squeaked. I cleared my throat again.
“Well you can stay all today. We won’t make you leave until tonight, alright?” Erica said.
I slowly looked up to meet her eyes. Her facial expression was the same as before. The same as always—a strong, brave women who gets down to business and doesn’t mess around. But her eyes looked like she was depressed. Like she had just learned one of the people she loves the most just died. I nodded and said, “Okay.”
Erica gave a short nod and then left without saying anything.
I took a peek at Apple. She was against the wall with her knees drawn up and her hands covering her face. Her shoulders shook as she silently cried. I looked away quickly and wiped away a tear.
“Guys? Erica is outside crying, do you know—” Calvin cut short when he saw Apple.
I looked up to see Calvin and Christa standing in the doorway. I bit my lip as I tried to not cry.
Erica is outside crying…
“What’s wrong?” Calvin mouthed to me.
I took a deep breath and motioned for them to leave the room. They did and I got up to follow.
When I closed the door I turned to find Christa and Calvin looking at me for answers.
“What is wrong with Erica and Alex?” Calvin asked.
I cleared my throat. “I just told them that I want to stay with Christa.”
Calvin’s expression went from worry to pain. Christa looked shocked. I wiped away more tears and sniffled.
