"Bryn! Where's that God damned man!" Xaera stormed through the cistern with one hand on her swollen belly whilst the other is supporting the weight from the back. Her eyes roamed the empty place before settling upon a familiar booth where the owner is gone. Seeing her chance, she cracked a smirk and waddled towards where the ale is hidden.
"Come on, it has to be here somewhere..." She flung the cabinet doors open, breaking the hinges as the wooden block fell flat against the pebbled cracked floor, only allowing a small thud to sound out before the sound of glass hitting glass resounded all around.
Even after nearly half an hour of looking, she found nothing but goat cheese and whatever else is left from last night.
But no damn ale anywhere.
"Looking for this?" The sound of Xaera's red haired husband rung clearly, his deep voice sending shivers down her spine, but she tried to ignore the way her body twitched in anticipation for his warm hugs and gentle butterfly kisses lining her neck just like a few months ago. But right now she was supposed to be angry at him.
She slowly turned around, facing him with one of her most scariest expression she could muster, but apparently for Brynjolf, it was nothing but a pout and averted eyes which any child could pull off.
His laughter only added more oil to the fire.
"It's not funny Brynjolf, it's been nine months already and I've hadn't had a single drop of ale at all! You're really killing me Bryn!" He continued laughing as he pulled Xaera by her arms slowly, shortening the gap between themselves until he placed a small kiss on her lips.
''The baby is due any minute lass, and the last thing I would want you to do is walk around swinging your arms everywhere, demanding for ale." Seeing as she wasn't responding, he kissed her cheek.
"One of the lads came limping to me with a black eye, claiming that you weren't in a good mood"
"He wasn't telling me where you hid the ale..." Again, Brynjolf laughed.
"How about you just come back to the bedroom and relax" She nodded and followed him.
She didn't even walk half way through the cistern yet before water pooled around her ankles and pain swarmed her from every direction, forcing her to clamp her legs shut.
"B - Brynjolf!" She managed to call out to him before she slowly slumped down, head hung low from pain. It took no longer than a second for Brynjolf to run to her side, quickly picking her up in his arms.
"What's happening? What's wrong?"
"Th-the baby! It's coming!" No other words were exchanged as Bryn ran towards the bedroom, kicking the door open with no thought to the broken hinges that fell to the ground.
They where rusting anyways.
"Bryn!!" Xaera clutched onto his shirt as he set her down on the mattress, refusing to let go with pained screams. Beads of sweat began forming on her tear-streaked face as another agonizing scream left her throat.
Many footsteps could be heard echoing off the walls of the cistern before everyone jumped inside, weapons drawn and everything.
Karliah and Sapphire were the first to appear with wide eyes before Delvin dropped his weapon to the ground, his face drained from every colour, leaving him pale as a ghost.
But before he could even utter a small cry, Sapphire booted him out, along with Brynjolf and covered the exit with her small frame.
"I-is the master..." Delvin shuddered at the scene he walked into before Sapphire sighed at his childish side.
"Oh stop blabbering like a little baby and go fetch a doctor!" Knowing not to double cross the thief, he left without another word, leaving Brynjolf on the floor still stuck in a haze.
He slowly stood up, leaning against the door frame as he felt all the energy drain from him in an instance. He looked past Sapphire's shoulder at the screaming Xaera on the bed and cringed at the sight. Karliah moved to the side of the bed to adjust her position, blocking Brynjolf's vision of his beloved partner.
Seeing how distressed her thief brother looks, she placed a comforting hand on his shoulder before giving it a gentle squeeze, a quick smile adorning her face.
"It's alright, Bryn. Karliah knows what she's doing." And then she walked back inside the room, covering the door which Brynjolf kicked broken with a large bed cloth that lay in the cupboard collection dust.
The red haired thief slumped to the ground with extended legs stretched out in front of him, his rough hand running through his red locks with closed eyes and a sigh.
Scream after scream, Brynjolf could do nothing but try to block out the sounds coming from the room, mentally battling with himself whether he would run inside and comfort his hurting lover, or stay outside here like he was told to do and just pray, pray to the divines that she would make it through unharmed and delivery a healthy child also.
Another scream caused him to hang his head between his legs in defeat, biting back his frustration and anger aimed at himself. This was the first time he felt so hopeless and so... weak. He hated to accept that statement but it was the truth. Every part of it was completely true.
But then he heard a cry.
So when Sapphire appeared kneeling down next to him, it seemed as if energy rushed back in him, as if the hours that passed only felt like passing seconds.
"Brynjolf...'' He waited in anticipation for what she was about to say, clutching her hands in his. Instead, she stood back up and led him inside the room.
There, sitting up on the bed was Xaera with beads of sweat washed over her, her clammy hair sticking to her face but she still wore a warm smile with streaming tears. Within her hands lay a bundled up baby who's cries echoed throughout the room, the cry Bryn heard just outside.
Xaera looked to him as he slowly approached her with staggering steps, his eyes stinging with tears in the process.
"It's a girl" Xaera said in a hushed whisper. The thief fell on his knees besides the bed side, his large hands hovering over the crying baby. Her chubby hands managed to hold onto Brynjolf's smallest finger before halting her cries, instead, happy gurgles rang out, forcing the forced back tears to happily slide down the prideful thief's face.
"My little girl, my little Aria" he let out a choked sob before erupting in gleeful laughter, gently pulling down Xaera for a kiss.
"I don't deserve this much happiness, for a man like me, I..." She pressed her forehead against his.
"You deserve as much happiness as I my love"
