+"hey, kid!" calum called out attempting to grab the attention of the limp boy as be stood around the edge of the fairly large, fresh crater.
the young boy waited for a reply but was instead met with the sound of a siren coming from the distance, so he made the decision to slide down the crater to get a closer view of the boy. he must've had the same idea calum had to find the "fallen star".
"well, that was a bad idea." calum thought as he stood up, the pain from sliding down on his bum hit him instantaneously.
brushing off all the dirt his pants collected calum finally made his way over to the boy.
he was waking up.
•
ten years later
"please!" cried calum as he fell to his knees in front of the elder man, "i can't lose this job. you can't do this to me!" he begged.
his boss looked down at him with pity and sighed after a long pause, finally then saying; "i'm sorry but there's—"
"you know what? forget it," the kiwi sniffled, getting up to his feet and grabbing his belongings.
•
he left the large building and then began walking home in the rain due to him losing his car months ago.
the whole city just looked grey, everything looked grey and depressing to calum, he no longer had integrity nor will to do anything now that he had no job.
his whole life was grey; he never had many friends, his parents barely keep in contact with him anymore, his sister went missing five years ago, he can hardly afford his shitty apartment and now he has no income because his boss thought he was "lacking the communication skills" he needed. great.
luckily his apartment was just another block away and not so lucky a car drove past him causing a puddle of water to splash up and drench his clothing.
"prick," he mumbled as he quickly scavenged for his flip phone to save it from getting wet— and yes, those still exist.
•
when calum finally made it to his apartment building he noticed a piece of paper taped against his wall.
"oh god, please no." was all he could think as he ripped the paper from the wall and read the bold printed letters he dearly dreaded;
"EVICTION NOTICE."
after briefly reading over the notice calum unlocked and entered his apartment, dramatically sighing and frantically running his hands through his hair, he grabbed his phone and called his landlord.
a few rings later a stressed and rushed voice answered the phone, "hello?"
"mark, what the fuck was on my door? you promised that you would wait longer, you know i don't have the money—" the kiwi was then cut off by the older man;
"—i know, i know, i know! i broke my ass trying to make sure nothing happened to you but a higher authority got involved and i can't help you anymore. no more hiding or stalling. you have 7 days to pay up or vacate the premises." said the landlord then hanging up.
the raven haired boy dropped to his knees and began to cry as his small phone fell to the floor. what was he going to do? where would he end up?
all that was heard in the apartment room was calum's soft cries and sniffles until his phone went off, signaling that someone was calling.
calum didn't want to answer and he intended on not doing so but the caller id caught his attention; luke hemmings. so he answered.
"he-llo?"
"calum?"
"yes?"
"you sound like shit. come meet me at the old coffee house on main street in ten, i need to talk to you."
"o-okay, sounds good."
"see ya."
the line went dead with just that.
