Like the rest of Willow Creek California the police station was old and run down with cheap wood and old dusty white walls. The smell of musk and coffee filled the air and people walked by me back in forth in the hallway outside the interviewing room. Freddy had dropped me off and had already called my brother, saying he would first drop me off at the station and then go to pick him up since the drive back to my house was so long. I had asked Fred if I could be the one to break the news to Jonah about our Uncles passing and he understandably obliged. The door to the interviewing room creaked open and Carli walked out and down the hallway without even a glance in my direction. I could still hear her crying as she rounded the corner and sat down with Hurley and sam in the conference room where the officer Freddy had called Robert said that "snacks would be provided when we finished". A woman with her hair done up in a tight red bun poked her pointy nose out the side of the doorframe.
"Soren, We'll see you now." I got up and pushed past the lady into the room. It had one stainless steel table in the center of the room along with two matching chairs on either side of said table. She looked to be in her early thirties and was dressed in a sharp navy blue suit. Her face was hard with no lines anywhere on her face for me to read but she seemed like a person who doesn't mess around.
"I am truly sorry about your loss Soren." she said in a monotone voice, as if she's given this speech before. I just bowed my head a little and stared at the table.
"It's easier if you try to stare at a fixed position to help deal with not thinking about a loss. I have found that out over the years" I blurted, and met her steady gaze.
"Soren I'm going to ask you some personal questions right now. Are you okay with answering them?" her voice got a little softer at this. But only a little.
"Ill do my best" I croaked.
"How old were you when your parents died?" she sped up the end of her question as I picked my head up.
"Why do you need to know this? And couldn't you also just look that up in a computer?" I rapidly spit out the words, feeling my anger rising.
"We need to hear it from you, this could be a murder, and we are keeping all possibilities open" her gaze hardened for a second. It was like a shadow flew across her face as if a warning to me to just answer the question.
"I was eight" I said, lowering my head back down to stare at the stainless steel table.
"Delilah and Peter Legreve died in a bank robbery correct?" she asked, her voice growing warmer, more sympathetic. My temper started to flare at this point.
"Look, all I know is that my parents went to the bank for a second and the place was held hostage by some guy who ended up killing all who was inside, including himself. Then My- I paused for a second. My Uncle came and Took me and my brother to live with him in Portland Maine for four years until we moved again, to Miner Wells Texas for two years, and now here for two." Hearing myself talk about my brother made me go dead still.
"Oh god. where's my brother. Wheres Jonah?" I could hear the own panic rising in my voice but the woman stood and came over to my side. The potent scent of her designer perfume filled my nostrils.
"Your brother is fine, don't worry. Freddy is on his way to back with him as we speak. My relief must have been clear on my face because she gave me a reassuring smile.
"Can I be the one to tell him?" I asked. She replied with a nod as if to say (Of course). She sat back down on the other side of the table again and pulled something out of a bag I didn't even see her bring into the room. She sat four objects down onto the table. On my far left was a lighter, on the middle left there was a rock, on the middle right a half drank water bottle, and on the very right there was one of those mini electronic fans that you brought to amusement parks when it got hot.
