I followed Amaris through the Corridor of the "air" wing that was empty from everyone being in the cafeteria for dinner. They were Probably eating some greenish goopy hamburgers or something and I felt bad for those who had to eat it.
We walked for another two or three minutes of silence around the bends of the hallway until Amaris stopped in front of an outcrop of a doorframe in the wall. But the weird part was the absence of a handle. She turned back to me and gave a know it all smirk. Usually this look from others makes me want to slap them in the back of the neck- but on her it looked quite stunning. One eyebrow arched, and the same corner of her mouth quirked up.
"Prepare your mind to be amazed" she said, carefully annunciating each word and widening her eyes. I just nodded and waited for her to do something, but she kept the same look on her face.
"Well. are you prepared!?" she yelled at me. I couldn't help but laugh.
"Yes, yes, I'm prepared!" But she didn't look convinced, so I made a show of my features. Closing my eyes and putting my head down for a couple seconds before bringing them back up to look at her.
"Now you are ready" she said, putting up her chin so that she tried to look down at me (Even though I was a few inches taller). I laughed again, and realized that I haven't really laughed like this in a long time. The thought made me drop my smile, but what Amaris did next shocked me back into awe. She turned towards the door and placed one hand in the middle. She turned back to look at me and smiled before looking back to the door. Seconds of nothing went by, until from her hand, water started to web out around the door. It slowly crept from her hand to the corners of the door until there was a layer of water shimmering and flowing like a thin pool. Then the water seeped into the door, and Amaris took her hand off of the reflective surface. She turned to look at me once more, as the door caved in with a pop and a crunch, and creeped open.
As we entered the dark room, a small yellow light flickered on one of the walls. It amused me because this light wasn't like all the other at Natura. This one was a bulb, and looked old. In fact, the whole room looked quite dated. It was small with just like every other room, no windows, but where the other rooms had dark grey walls, these were all bare white. There was a desk pushed into the corner with a dinosaur aged computer on it that seemed to be off. Then, in the other corner was a ladder, that went up into a hole of darkness in the ceiling where Amaris was already climbing.
"Why can't the coolest place in Natura be somewhere I don't feel like my life will be in peril?" I called up to her.
"You are seriously such a wimp Ren" She replied, nearly at the hole. Ren. She called me Ren. Only one other person ever called me that. And he was far away being held captive by the Director.
"So, are you coming? Or am I just going to go myself?" she said, shaking her head with one hand grasping the top ring of the ladder, and the other on her hip, giving her the look of supreme sass. I replied by putting one foot on the ladder and a hand on the highest ring I could grab. The climb seemed to have been taking forever, and my unconditioned arms were sore by the time Amaris reached the hatch at the top. She looked down at me, and I couldn't quite see her face, but only heard her two words.
"Look down" without thinking, I tilted my head towards where I had come to see only a little hole of light about fifty feet below us.
"Jesus, wh-what the hell!" I looked back up towards Amaris after clutching to the ladder for dear life. I then only heard laughter coming from the claustrophobic inducing ladder-well. Then she opened the hatch with a swoosh, as I felt the cold night air blow past my face. Amaris clambered up, and stuck out her hand. I grabbed it, and as I took the last step onto the final rung, my foot slipped for one heart thudding moment. But Amaris was there, she kept her one hand clasped in mine, and hooked her fingers on her other hand through an empty belt loop on the military styled pants I was wearing. She heaved me out of the hole, and onto a white deck with a curved railing.
