1st person P.O.V.

I watch from the bushes as the old woman living here finishes watering her garden and goes inside her home.

I glance at the window and see a girl with blonde hair sitting at a table along with two other adults, probably her parents.

Parents... I think. I suddenly feel a chill run up my spine and I wrap my scarf tighter around my neck. I look up again and see the old woman serving soup to the little girl and her parents.

I hear a growl and remember why I'm here in the first place. I direct my attention back to the garden, Take what you need and nothing else. I nod to myself. I've been doing this for the past two months since I left my orphanage.

I shiver just thinking about that cold, grey place. I'm glad I ran away.

I shake my head to get those thoughts out of my head. Time to get dinner! I get in a running position and wait. I glance one more time at the window and see them all eating dinner and laughing. Once again, I hear my stomach growl.

I hunch down slightly to give me more speed and I wait. Wait...wait...wait.... NOW! I make a dash for the garden, I quickly open the gate and run into the garden.

I scan the garden. I spot some carrots and decide that those will work. I tip toe over to them, bend down, and just reach for them when, "Who's out here?"

Oh no! Out of instinct, I jump up and make a dash for the gate. But I trip on something and fall face first to the ground. When I look up I see the old woman standing over me holding a shovel.

Oh no... Sh-she's not gonna beat me is she?! Back at my orphanage, one of the ladies would hit you if you misbehaved. I shield my face with my arms.

"Please don't hit me! I was just hungry and I needed some food, I-"

"Calm yourself child! I wasn't going to hit you!"

I take my arms from my face, now completely confused. "Huh?" I ask.

She sighs. "I only asked who was out here..." She looks closely at me, "Where are your parents, dear?"

"I don't have any parents..." I reply softly.

She looks into my eyes. Then, unexpectedly, she holds out her hand to me. I blink. I look at her hand and hesitantly take it.

She helps me up. "Come in child. You can eat dinner with me and my family," she jerks her head toward her house, "If you want to?"

I beam and say, "Sure!" I clear my throat and say in a more polite manner, "Um, thank you ma'am." And I follow her into her house.

A few minutes later...

I'm sitting at their table, staring at the warm soup in front of me. "Go on and eat kid, there's plenty to go around," says the girl's father, his blue eyes stare at me. I glance at him before I slowly pick up my spoon and start eating.

I'm sitting next to the little girl, who's actually my age. She asks me, "What's your name?"

I look at her and say, "Harmony."

She smiles a closed eye smile and says, "That's a pretty name!"

I smile a little and say "Thanks! Uh... What's your name?"

"Winry."

I smile again, "That's a pretty name too!"

"Thanks!" She smiles.

I feel a little more relaxed, so I smile a real smile and start to take bigger bites of my soup. After a little while of eating, Winry asks me, "So how come you were taking things from the garden?"
