For the second time this week my classes were cancelled due to another mysterious murder of a student. Even though I didn't know who they were, I found myself crying as I brushed my teeth.
It could have been me.
They have families, friends, maybe even pets, that need them and are going to miss them. It saddened me thoroughly, knowing that these people, no older than me, now cease to exist.
I didn't want to sit around, and be too afraid to leave my dorm room because there is a possible serial killer targeting students of my college, so I took my phone off the charger and left my room, leaving my roommate alone to sleep. He parties a lot, and he no doubt got back late last night, so I didn't bother asking if he wanted to grab a cup of coffee with me. I did send him a text, as an afterthought, that classes were cancelled today. That way he doesn't waste his time getting ready and walking to class for nothing. Which is what I did.
The cold breeze hit me as soon as I opened the door. I shivered and put my hands in my coat pocket, and looked down at the sidewalk to shield my face from the brisk wind.
"Beautiful day isn't it?" I was startled at the sudden presence of another person, and I almost tripped. The person who did the startling reached out and caught me before I could fall and embarrass myself further. "Jesus, I didn't mean to scare you, sorry."
"It's fine, honestly, I'm just sorry you had to see that." I laughed awkwardly before looking up at the stranger. My breath caught in the back of my throat. He was beautiful. fuck the day being beautiful, have you looked in the mirror?!
"Anyway... I'm Dan. Nice to meet you." The man held out his hand and I shook it firmly.
"Phil, and the pleasure is mine."
"So, Phil, what are you doing out here by yourself? Didn't you hear about the new "buddy system" rule? Or are you just ignoring it?"
"I could ask you the same question." I said raising my eyebrows and giving him a cheeky grin.
"I can handle myself. I don't need someone to protect me." He laughed and put his hands in his pocket, smiling at the ground.
"Yeah I feel the same way. Besides this psychopath only kills at night apparently, so I think we're safe anyway."
"Where are you headed?" The sudden change of subject took me off guard and it took a second for me to respond.
"I am going to the café, because I need my coffee. You're welcome to join me Dan." I said, smiling at him.
"If you don't mind, coffee sounds great actually." He retuned the smile, his dimples making him look even more beautiful.

"I can't believe you dropped out of culinary school!" Dan said, leaning his chair back on two legs.
"Hey, it wasn't doing it for me. I would much rather be a councilor than bake cookies for a living."
"But you would be super cute with an apron covered in flour and cake icing." Dan was smiling so big that he had the cutest crinkles around his eyes.
"I would definitely not look cute like that. If anything I would look like an incompetent bimbo!" I tried to control my laughter at the thought of me in a chefs hat and apron.
"You would though. Like, you already have an adorable aura, add an apron and some cupcakes, and it would be unbelievably cute." He nodded his head "matter of factly" and I just shook mine, smiling down at my mug. I knew I was blushing but I was hoping Dan couldn't see.
"Whatever you say Dan." I replied chuckling at the brown haired boy.
"Hey I'm having a party tonight at my frat house, you should be my plus one."
"I'm flattered, really, but parties aren't my scene. Plus there is killer on the lose. And with my luck, I'd be his next victim if I went to that party."
"Ohhhh come on Philly. I'll protect you. We'll use the buddy system and we'll all be okay." He busted up laughing and I joined him. "Please?" he said, a more serious tone to his voice.
"What we just met and I already have the honor of being your plus one?" I cocked an eyebrow waiting for his response. He raised both hands up in a surrender fashion.
"What's wrong with that?"
I bit my cheek, contemplating. "Nothing I guess.." He clapped his hands and got out his wallet, laying a $10 on the table.
"Oh, are you paying for me?" I asked jokingly, giving him a smirk.
"Yes. I am." he replied seriously.
"Wait, no. I wasn't being serious. I can pay for myself, keep your money." I struggled to dig my wallet out of my pocket. He reached across the table gripping my hands with his.
"It's fine, Phil. Really." He slowly took his had away, his eyes never breaking contact with mine. I felt as if I was in a trance and couldn't look away. Dan cleared his throat and he looked to someone behind me. I watched as his entire demeanor shifted. It was as if his dark brown eyes turned completely black. And his smile turned into a frightening scowl.
"Uhh Dan are you okay?" I asked, genuinely worried about him.
He started getting up, his eyes still locked on that person. "It was nice meeting you, see you tonight?" He looked at me for confirmation.
"Um yea. I'll be there. What do I wear?"
"What you're wearing now is great. Look I have to go, bye Phil." He leaned down swiftly and kissed my cheek before basically running out of the café. I touched my cheek were his lips had just been.
what the hell actually just happened?
