I could tell that he didn't believe me for one second.
"Don't lie to me." He said, grabbing his hoodie sleeve and wiping away one of the tears on my cheek. "Is it your dad?"
I looked down at the ground, avoiding his question.
He sighed, and sat down next to me. "Why do you stay? You could leave if you wanted to. You could find some place so much better."
I could feel the tears swelling in my eyes again. "I can't leave. What about Cat? And my mom, what about her?" I shook my head. "No, I can't leave. Not yet anyways."
I turned to look at Jaspen, who was staring into the distance. "You know, someday, you won't have an abusive dad."
I shook my head. "I know. But that's not today."
We both fell silent and a soft wind blew my hair out of my face. Jaspen turned to look at me and I quickly looked back down at the roof shingles.
We sat there for a moment in silence, accompanied by the sound of birds and crickets.
I shut my eyes, hoping the world around me would dissappear when I opened them. I could here Jaspen get up. I expected him to immediately leave, but instead he walked over to me.
"Things will better. I promise." I felt a soft kiss on my cheek and heard the trees russle as he dissappeared, but I didn't open my eyes.
I thought about what Jaspen said. Someday, you won't have an abusive dad. Someday.
Someday, I wish that I can forget everything that my dad did to me. Someday, I wish it will be just me and Jaspen.
