I was crushed. What was wrong with me? Why on my birthday did all the bad things happen? Was I some kind of mistake?

I begin crying and Jacob leans down and hugs me. I push him off of me. "No! You don't get to hug me, you hated me for what happened to May! You can't comfort me now! Get out," I scream at him. Louis came and carried me to the couch. Jacob whispered something to Louis then left.

"I hate my birthday!" I sob into Louis shirt. "Happy birthday!" He whispers and sits there hugging me until I cried myself to sleep.

Day 11

I wake up to Louis' arms around me. I rub my eyes and my heart begins to ache again due to the loss of Mr. Perkins life.

"Ava, it's okay." Louis mumbles. "How did you know I was awake?"

"I feel you breathing deep. Jacob said there was a note left for you in Mr. Perkins house."

"Then let's go get it."

I pull on my hoodie and some house shoes then Louis and I walk to his house by each other's side. I unlock his house with the spare key I had and Jacob was right. There was a note on his table for me.

Dear Ava,

I know you must be crushed right now. Eight years ago your family and best friend died and today me. Yes, I knew I was dying. This morning I woke up feeling weak of age. I made the most of it, I came and saw you wishing you a happy birthday. I only ever prayed to stay alive to look after you.
You now have Louis to look after you and keep you safe. I do believe the people that killed your father are still out there looking for you. Your safe with Louis. But... Your not safe in this town.
I love you Ava, like a daughter! You cared for me, you know when I said you were smiling more and you just wanted to get out of this town? I said Louis.
Louis is your answer to leaving this town. Louis knows what it's like out in the world and he can help you. Don't shut yourself out like you did to your parents death.
Forgive Jacob for his selfishness. God knows what he did was wrong. Forgive Liam, most of all forgive me! I'm sorry to go like this, everyone has there time.

I know who killed your father. There was more to the story than your parents let on. They to had their secrets and they kept it very well. May knew that night that your father was going to shot, so did your parents. They didn't know the ripple effect it would have on May. They didn't know May would die as well.

I drop the note, he knew? He knew the whole time who killed them, and he didn't tell me? Louis picks it up and gives it to me. I stuff it into my packet. "Fucking Jacob." That's why Jacob was crying. He read the note.

I ran across the street and banged on Jacobs door. He answers the door and I get upset. It wasn't May to open the door. I bawl, "You read the note." I tell him and he nods. "Why did she have to be so selfish? Why did she have to go?" Jacob hugs me and we both stand there crying. After awhile we separate and Louis stands there awkwardly. "I need to get out of this town." I say.

"What did the note say?" Louis asks and I shake my head giving it to him. I will do what Mr. Perkins says. I go home and open my parents door tearing things apart until I see the box with my name on it.
