Never ever EVER repeat the same word too many times.
Unless you are writing with mystery... you can keep to the man, the boy, the girl, ect.
But if your character has a name, its best to use your vocabulary.
For example:
Shanon picked the strawberries from the bush. Shanon popped one into her mouth, savouring the rich sweetness of the strawberry.
Seem ok? But what if we didnt repeat some words...
Shanon picked the strawberries from the bush. The young girl popped one into her mouth, savouring the rich sweetness of the red berry.
See? Try using different words to describe something, this is why your stretch of vocabulary is important.
The more words you know, the better.
And remember, NEVER repeat a scene.
Sure you can once or twice... but keep each scene slightly different. If the scenes are repeated, the story will become boring, as the reader already knows what is next.
Unless needed, refrain from writing similar scenes exactly the same way.
Example:
Robin lay on the dusty ground, he looked up to the dragon looming over him. His amber eyes grew wide, just as the creature doused him in flames.
Robin lay on the dirty ground, he looked up to the monster looming over him. His gold eyes grew wide, just as the monster lunged.
Compare it with this:
Robin lay on the dusty ground, he looked up to the dragon looming over him. His amber eyes grew wide, just as the creature doused him in flames.
Robin coughed as dust clogged his throat. He was sprawled on the ground, eyes slowly rose to meet those of a monster. A soft cry escaped his lips, eyes grown as wide as plates. The collosal beast roared before pouncing upon its prey.
Repitition shows the reader that you lack creativity. Express your scenes with different words and different styles.
So remember, DONT REPEAT TOO MUCH!
