"Ugh, Martinez, she's brutal," you pouted, your head resting on your arms on the table.
He sighed, rubbing your back.
"And so is he," you said into your arms, remembering the unfinished fight between you and Chris.
He sighed again and tapped your arm lightly, signaling for your head to come up. You brought your head up to look at him and he spoke, "Y/N. It'll all be ok, I swear. This is how relationships are; there'll be fights and there'll be lovey-dovey moments. And right now, you're just not experiencing the ladder."
You sighed, resting your chin on your hand while looking at him. "Yeah, I know. But, it's just the look he gave me, and the way he spoke to me that is really getting me pissed. He looked at me like I just started the Holocaust or something; like I was the world's worst person. Like, so what I've had sex with Watney before? Watney and I have been friends for years, and we even dated. Chris should just get over himself." You brought your gaze away from Martinez to stare off into space- no pun intended- and just think about life.
Little did you know that someone was listening in on the conversation.
Beth's POV
"Like, so what I've had sex with Watney before? Watney and I have been friends for years, and we even dated. Chris should just get over himself," Y/N spoke from where she was sitting.
Oh my God, I thought, covering my mouth to hide my smile. Though they couldn't see me, I still felt the need to do so. This was good.

I practically speed walked to find Commander Lewis to tell her the news. Hopefully, she would believe me.
Rounding the corner and finding her in the gym, I smiled to myself. She was currently on the treadmill, blasting some disco music on her iPod. Every crew member knew not to disturb her while she was 1. in the gym and 2. blasting disco music on her iPod, but I couldn't resist.
I tapped her on the shoulder and she glanced at me, not flinching. She glared at me for a second and then turned the treadmill off, taking out her earbuds, too.
"Yes, Johanssen?" She asked, irritated.
I tried to contain my smile as I said, "I have some conflicting news, Commander."
"And what is that?" She asked curiously.
I looked down to my feet before looking back up to her. "I overheard Y/N talking to Martinez and she said that..her and Watney.." I looked a little to the left of Commander Lewis, looking out the window.
"Yes, Beth?" She asked again.
I looked back up to her eyes. "Y/N said that her and Watney have a..a past. Like, I mean not just as friends...I mean as.." I looked to the side and did a motion with my hands. "Lovers."
Lewis gave me a shocked look and then covered her face with her hand, looking down. "Look, Beth, I didn't want this to get out, but I already knew. And fortunately, I am ok with this because it is over between them and there are no further relations like that on our team."
I fake smiled at her, nodding my head. Then, my backup plan came into play- even if I don't know if it's true. "Well, I also overheard Y/N and Martinez talking and it sounds like they're in a relationship of some sort." That'll get the bitch in trouble.
Lewis' eyebrows raised. "Wha-what? How could you know? And how could I not know?"
I fake smiled again, trying to think of a response. "Well," I began, "I overheard them talking about how they would like to conceal their relationship from the rest of the crew. I don't know, Lewis. I just don't know about them. But about you not knowing, it's completely fine. I wouldn't have known either if I hadn't heard them talking." I smiled apologetically at her.
