I glared at Ella, my lip jutting out in a pout as I looked back in the direction of my house, which was slowly getting farther and farther away. “I can’t believe you talked me into this.” I said, staring down at my lap, the adrenaline rush of sneaking out slowly fading away. With every turn of the wheel, my discomfort grew. I could already tell that joining my friends tonight had been a bad choice.
I had been pacing back and forth in my room for hours that night, debating whether or not to go. A simple text from Ella had convinced me that I couldn’t ditch my friends that night, though right now I was really doubting that decision. I had never snuck out before, and I was getting extremely nervous. What if my parents found out?
“Oh, come on, don’t be such a downer. It’s going to be fun!” Ella tried to convince me, grinning, bouncing up and down with excitement. Her enthusiasm only served to make me even more worried. “You can’t tell me you aren’t curious to see whether or not the rumors are true,” she said, looking around the group for support. Ethan, as usual, eagerly took her bait.
“Yeah! I mean, everybody’s been talking about this! The whole school is going to be there,” he reminded me. “You should be particularly interested, considering a little someone is going to be there also,” he said pointedly, causing me to send him a warning look. Really? He thought that would make me feel oh-so-calm? These people sucked at making a person feel better.
“Don’t worry, Serenity, it’s not like the rumors are real.” Pepper said, looking at everybody though the mirror. “It’s just a rickety old train.” She said. “Honestly? The only reason that I’m going is to make fun of all the screaming girls.” I cracked a smile at that one. I knew that the majority of the girls would be cowering in fear just to get the boys to pay attention to them. After all, getting attention is what girls did best, wasn’t it? I almost couldn’t even get on Facebook anymore what with all the girls’ statuses. It was disgusting.
“It’s not the rumors that scare me,” I said, not all that honestly. “It’s what will happen if my parents discovered I snuck out.” I bit my lip. Both the train and my parents finding out scared me, not that I was about to admit that.
Pepper nodded in agreement. “I know what you mean.” She said. “My parents would kill me if they go and find out that I’m gone.”
“I’m sure we won’t stay that long,” Andrew said, looking at Ella with eyebrows raised. “Right?”
Ella nodded fervently. “Of course!” She said, smiling at us. “I couldn’t expect all of your parents to be as understanding as mine.” She said, causing me to roll my eyes. Ugh. Sometimes this girl could really get on my nerves...
Pepper stopped at a red light, taking the chance to look back at us. “Okay, well, I’m leaving at two a.m.” She turned to face us. “If you somehow get separated, make sure to get back here around 1:50, or else you’re gonna get left behind.” She said. We all nodded in understanding.
The light turned green again, and she gently pressed the gas, urging the car forward. I squirmed uncomfortably in my seat, gazing out at the street as it whizzed by. I leaned my head back on my chair, closing my eyes, exhausted. It had been a long day, and once the adrenaline rush had faded, I was feeling the results. I was definitely not excited to go to school tomorrow.
To start off, we had a test in Pre-Calc. Bleh. What the teacher loved to do in that class was to teach us all the wrong stuff. Meaning, we knew nothing about what was on the test. If we’d complain, she’d just look at us in outrage, claiming that it was our fault we hadn’t studied. In my opinion, she wasn’t a very good teacher.
Then, later on in the day, I had to do a big presentation for my science teacher. With my luck, I had gotten paired up with the two laziest guys. When we worked on the project in class, they would start off helping, then walk off to hang out with their friends. I never complained, seeing as I knew it wouldn’t do me any good. They would ignore me.
I focused on how smooth the pavement was underneath us, only feeling the occasional bump on the level road. I felt myself slowly drift into sleep, when I got jerked awake from Ethan’s hand on my shoulder, gently shaking me.
“We’re here,” he said, his voice excited. I opened my eyes and I looked around, seeing the path that would lead us to the train. Pepper looked at me, and she sighed, pulling out the keys and opening her door.
“Well. Here we go,” she said, stepping out of the car.
