“What the...” Carter said, suddenly having to steady himself as the train burst forward. My eyes widened, and I quickly moved to look out the window, not quite believing that this was actually happened.
My eyes confirmed it; the train was moving. I could see the trees zipping by at a fast speed. I let out a strangled noise, and turned to look at the people beside me.
“This can’t be possible,” I said, running my hands through my hair frantically. “There are no tracks, this train is so old...it’s been there forever! There’s no way...” I started to say, and then buried my head in my hands. “It isn’t possible,” I whispered.
We were all frozen, staring out the window as it confirmed what we couldn’t believe. Trees and bushes were flying past, the dark night sky twinkling above as if laughing at our confusion. “Wha...wha...” Pepper couldn’t seem to get the word out.
My mouth had fallen open in pure shock. This couldn’t be happening, right? I brought my right hand up and shut my eyes, pinching my skin. I opened my eyes, wincing in pain, but saw the same view in front of me as before.
“Hello passengers. My name is Mike and I will be your conductor,” a cheery voice came through the speakers. We all turned and looked at the small device perched in the corner of the compartment. The lights flickered on and I blinked in the sudden light. “We’ll be stopping at our next stop in about an hour,” he informed us, before continuing, “thank you for joining us at The Game, and enjoy your stay!” He said, before the speaker clicked off.
We stood there for at least a minute, not saying anything, staring at the speaker in shock. A sudden ‘bang!’ broke us out of our reverie, and I turned to look at the young lady who had walked in.
Blonde hair piled into a bun, a small blue hat on top, she had on the uniform of a stewardess. She smiled a winning smile at us, before walking forward. “Hello, boys and girls. My name is Charlotte and I’m here to make your stay comfortable.” She said, grinning at us, her teeth perfect. She snapped her fingers and several people walked in, carrying plates of food.
I wish I could’ve said something, asked what was going on, accuse them of playing a practical joke on us, but I couldn’t say anything. I found myself being handed a plate piled full of delicious foods, and I took it, blindly and numbly.
She gave us another smile, before turning around and walking out.
I stared at the food, before sitting down in one of the benches with a plop. “What was...what was that?” I whispered, looking around at them, lost. None of them replied, but they all sat down on the benches too.
Andrew glanced at me and then back at the food. After a few minutes of silence, he finally answered me. “I don’t know, but this is really weird.”
“Thanks, Mr. Obvious,” James said, sarcastic. “I figured that out myself. How could this have happened? There was no tracks, and this train has been here for as long as I can remember. It’s really old. How does the electricity even work anymore? And how did those people get on here? I think we’re being pranked. There’s no way this is possible.”
Carter nodded. “Right. The person who handed me my food looked familiar. I swear I’ve seen him before. This has to be someone at school’s idea of a joke. I don’t know how they did it, but there’s no explanation.”
Ella sighed in relief. “Oh, thank goodness. The other option...that this really was happening...wow, I don’t think I could’ve dealt with that. That’s just too...freaky.” She said, shuddering.
James shook his head. “Well I’m not going to just sit by and let them laugh at us. I’m going to go and demand that they-” As he had talked, he had started to get up and walk towards the door. He stopped as he tried opening the door, only to find out that it was locked. “Are you kidding me!? You guys are going to try and play a joke on us like this, then you lock the door!? What type of sick freaks are you!?” He started yelling, pounding on the door.
Carter went up to him, tugging on his arm. “James, James..” He tried to speak, in a reasoning tone, but James shoved him away. James continued to hit the door, and I sort of lost interest. What could I do?
So, I took the smartest option. The wisest road. The thing anyone with half a brain would do.
I ate the food.
