Letter to the future
The year 2011
To whoever this may read….
Hi,
I don’t know who you are and you don’t know me. By the time you read this, I’ll be long gone. I don’t expect to leave some big expression on the world. I am not someone famous. At least, not at this time and I don’t think I will be any time soon.
Still, I would like to think that by leaving this letter, some part of me will continue to be. Even when I will not.I often wonder what the future would look like. Will it be like in the movies? An underwater world or the post-apocalyptic wasteland? Or maybe it will be High-Tec with flying cars and teleportation ports. Perhaps there will be no more pollution or maybe everyone lives underground now and the Earth itself is like Third Earth in the Bobby Pendragon series. Do those books still exist? Or any books at all?
But I shouldn’t be talking about the what-might-be future in my eyes. Because by the time you read this letter, it already is the future. The whole point of this letter is giving the future something from the past.
The question is, what part should I give? I’m sure history itself will leave a mark on the future, so I won’t go into that. The one pulling the strings today might be replaced tomorrow. I guess I should just start with something about myself then.
I’m not a people’s person. I like to keep to myself. I spend my free time with writing and reading, fantasy mostly. Yes, I do have friends. And we do go out occasionally. I’m just fine by myself as well. I have a pet, a rabbit, who has reached the incredible age of 13 years and still very healthy! Yes, super bunny I know, hahaha.
It’s raining here today, but not pouring. And it’s supposed to be summer. It used to be nice and warm in summer, but these last few years the heat starts in April and the summer is filled with storms. Yay for Global Warming.
What else do I like to do? I’m into archery and rock-climbing. I know what you think. How does that fit in with someone that likes to read and write? I don’t know. I just like different things. One doesn’t exclude the other. Oh right, I ride too. Horses in case you’re wondering.I like autumn storms. Not the rain, though I don’t mind on occasion, but the winds and the colors and the sound of leaves at my feet. I am a child of autumn. Born in the September storms, with a hint of summer still lingering. Hah, I like the way that sounds. It has something poetic.
My favorite flowers are tiger lilies. I like the way they are different from other flowers, though I can’t explain why.The funny thing with letters like this is that I don’t really have any idea what to put down. What would be worth saving for the future? I don’t think it is possible to tell, because at this point we don’t know what the future holds. Maybe the things we don’t find very special will be long gone by the time this letter is found and read. Maybe Earth itself will be gone and you are reading this from another galaxy. Or is that just my imagination running wild again? I have been told that I have a wild imagination before. Not that I care. It is great to escape into unrealistic worlds every now and then.
That doesn’t really fix this problem though. I guess instead of talking I should include some pictures of the world today. How my hometown looks. Things I like to do. Places I like to visit. That would give a better idea of the world today, don’t you think?
I will also include a few examples of the things I’ve been writing about. A picture of my friends and maybe some other things too.
Yes, that would probably be a good idea.
I wonder what you will think when reading this letter. I wish I could get to know you and take a peek into your life too like you just did in mine. It would be even better to receive a reply. Even if you think I wrote a bunch of nonsense. It would be nice to know what the future looks like. But I don’t think that will be possible. Unless someone invented time travel. Did they? If so, then it would be great if you could send a reply. It doesn’t really matter what about. Though it would be nice to have a pen pal from the future. How many people can say they have that?
Anyway. Thanks for reading. I hope you have a great future.
