Coal tried in vain to block out the sound of his Dad's music drowning from the speakers of the truck. Miles of unpopulated hills past slowly, almost as if dragging behind on the horizon. His father tapped his hand on the wheel in tune with a song about a renegade who had it made. Coal guessed it didn't go so well for the guy, beings that the law was after him. Taking a chance, he glanced at his dad to see if he was actually enjoying the song, or rather he was deep in thought and subconsciously picking up the rhythm.
Coal got his looks from his dad. Black hair, strong jaw, high cheek bones, and big feet. They both walked the same, talked the same, but they were definitely not built the same way. Coals' Dad was brutal and cut throat, with a side that's soft with women and children. Coal being neither, didn't get to see that side of him any more. Especially since he was about to be a man.
Coal on the other hand was nice to every body, so long as they were nice to him. He'd do favors with out asking for any thing in return and bend over back wards for the people he liked. He's quit and doesn't like to speak his mind, and all together shy. His dad, as he had stated at 4:00am this morning, was gonna change that.
By this time of day the sun was closer to setting then rising. They drove slowly through a washed out town that consisted of one grocery store, two bars, a gas station, and a feed store. The feed store also doubled as a meat market and a restaurant, serving fresh food, all day long. Coal gaged at the thought of eating a freshly killed chicken or cow. His dad saw this and put a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"Look Coal, I know you think I'm being harsh about all this, but your mothers right. If you can't handle a small fight at school, how the hell are you gonna make it in the marines?" Coal looked cross at his father.
"Wait, Marines? Who said I was going into the Marines?!" Coal sat forward in his seat to look his father in the eyes.
"Your mom." His dad furrowed his eye brows and laughed. "Yeah, your mom use to do that to me to. Make decisions for me. But I do have to agree with her. The Marines would be a good start for you. It'll break-"
"Break me down, and build me up into something else!" Coal almost shouted not wanting to hear it. "Something that I'm not." Coal whispered the last part.
The muscle in his dad's jaw jumped. "Look, I wasn't saying you had to. All I am saying is that it would be a good start. It doesn't matter any way, you have this summer to figure out where you want to be, and I'm gonna give you enough taste of the marines to help you make that decision." He stared forward not wanting to see the look on his son's face already knowing what it would be.
Coal glared hard at his father. Not only had they got him up before dawn, they had also stripped him of every thing he owned besides his tooth brush and tooth paste, and his body washes. The only part of his belongings he had with him were what he had put on this morning. This consisted of black jeans, a black long sleeve shirt, and black combat boots. He was forced to leave behind his iPod and phone too, with only a good bye text message to his friends.
After a good long moment of silence, they pulled into an army surplus store.
"What size do you wear?" Coals dad asked, taking his seat belt off.
"29-30 in jeans, and a medium in shirts." He didn't look at his father when saying this, realizing now, why they had let him leave with out cloths.
His dad was only gone for about fifteen minutes before coming back with four large bags, and a receipt.
Coal took one of the bags and dug threw it finding black, grey, green, and white shirts, all a size large. He looked at his father once again cross.
His father looked back with a grin a maniac would where and said in the same tone Major Pain had used, "I'm gonna make you strong."
